Live and act

Horst Loy studied at the Technical University of Berlin with a degree in engineering and then went to Italy on a scholarship for a year before taking the major state examination in 1949. Initially he worked as a construction assessor for various authorities, and from 1952 a freelance architect in Essen. He was a member of the Association of German Architects (BDA).

Loy was involved in the planning of public buildings, settlement projects, urban planning, sacred and private buildings. He designed the new building of the Burggymnasium in the city center of Essen, which was destroyed in the Second World War and which has been a listed building since 2001 . “The new building comprised three construction phases - class wing, gymnasium and auditorium [...]. It is a three-storey school building with a projecting flat roof and was clad with shell limestone to match the other representative buildings on Burgplatz. ”Between 1956 and 1960, Loy played a key role in the planning of the new Folkwang Museum in Essen , which was also destroyed in the war . Along with the Duisburg Lehmbruck Museum, it is considered to be one of the most important new museum buildings in Germany of this time. As an example of modern museum architecture in the Federal Republic of Germany, the building, which is now a listed building, shows the link between architecture and exhibition design in the 1950s. Loy also planned the Evangelical Trinity Church in Essen-Borbeck during this time . From 1970 to 1976 Loy worked on the planning of the Aalto Theater .

Loy was married and the father of the director Christof Loy .
