Ulfert Janssen
Ulfert Janssen (born December 11, 1878 in Bilawe near Glogau , † February 19, 1956 in Munich ) was a German sculptor .
Life
Janssen studied from 1899 to 1902 at the Technical University of Braunschweig and at the Munich Art Academy . In 1911 he became professor for modeling and life drawing at the architecture department of the Technical University of Stuttgart . During the Second World War Janssen was regarded as an “artist in action” and took part in numerous exhibitions during the Third Reich .
Works
Janssen's works include the Century Fountain in Essen from 1907 and the Ceres Fountain in the Stuttgart Market Hall from 1916 as well as the twelve medallions with the portraits of Bismarck, Kant, Leibnitz, Leonardo da Vinci, Luther and Plato as well as Homer, Dante, Shakespeare, Goethe, Schiller and Uhland at the Bonatzbau at the University of Tübingen . The pillar figures Prometheus and Heracles as well as the caryatid reliefs in the rear gallery, the Roman she-wolf and the goddess Minerva above the entrance doors of the auditorium of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich are also by him, as well as some of the sculptures at the Johannes Kepler Gymnasium in Bad Cannstatt . He also created a bronze bust by the sculptor Hermann Bleeker . In 1935 the Carl Peters monument was erected by Janssen in Hanover . Janssen created the rich facade decorations on two outstanding buildings in Apolda , Thuringia , the town house built in 1910 and the Sparkasse from 1926.
