Gerhard J. Bellinger (born March 11, 1931 in Bochum ; † June 20, 2020 in Bonn ) was a German Catholic theologian . He was professor for New Testament theology, church and religious history at the Technical University of Dortmund .

Life

Gerhard Josef Bellinger was the youngest of three children from the marriage of the bricklayer and furnace builder Bernhard Josef Bellinger (1900–1970) and Maria Auguste nee. Rittmann (1906–1980). He grew up in Bochum and attended high school in Bochum until it was destroyed in 1943. From 1943 to 1946 he was a student at the secondary school in Heiligenstadt im Eichsfeld, where he was also an altar boy in the Redemptorist monastery church . In 1946, after being occupied by the Red Army, the friars put him in contact with the boarding school Collegium Josephinum Bonn , where he was able to take his Abitur in 1952. During his time at boarding school he was a contemporary witness of the numerous activities of the establishment of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn.

Bellinger studied philosophy , Catholic theology and history at the Philosophical-Theological Academy Paderborn (1952–1956) and at the University of Munich (1954–1955). At the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich his teachers included Michael Schmaus ( dogmatics ), Romano Guardini (Christian worldview and religious philosophy) as well as Helmut Kuhn (American cultural history and philosophy), Hermann Krings (philosophy) and Franz Schnabel (history).

From 1958 to 1961 he worked as a religion teacher in Gelsenkirchen. With the intention of doing a doctorate in Catholic theology, Bellinger continued his studies at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster from 1961 . Here his teachers included Joseph Ratzinger (dogmatics and the history of dogmas), Walter Kasper (dogmatics), Johann Baptist Metz ( fundamental theology ) and, above all, Theodor Filthaut ( pastoral theology ), who pointed out to him the catechism Romanus as the subject of a dissertation and then also his doctoral supervisor has been. From 1980 he taught as a full university professor for the subject of Catholic theology and its didactics with a focus on New Testament theology, church and religious history at the University of Dortmund.

As a university lecturer, he has taught generations of students for teaching at the various school levels the knowledge they need to teach religious studies in his lectures and seminars for three decades. After his name the "Prof. Dr. Bellinger Foundation ”in the trusteeship of the SOS Children's Village Foundation, through which all children and young people in the SOS Children's Village receive support in the field of education and training. On the occasion of his retirement in 1996, Bellinger received a commemorative publication from his colleagues and friends .

As an 85-year-old university professor emeritus, Bellinger published his autobiography in 2017 under the title: "Whoever follows a star does not turn back".

Gerhard J. Bellinger had been a member of the Catholic student association KStV Teutoburg Paderborn in the KV since 1955 .

Teaching and Research

In addition to his teaching activities at the university, Bellinger wrote important specialist books that were translated into thirteen languages.

In the area of New Testament theology , which represented the main part of his subjects in lectures and seminars, the Bible guide, translated into three languages, is available, on which he contributed significantly. In 2009, as a summary of his lectures on theology of the New Testament, his work Jesus: Life - Work - Fate was published .

In the field of church history, his research focus was on the history of denominational catechisms, in which he continued his dissertation with the " Bibliography of the Catechism Romanus" and the first manual of catechetical instruction entitled " Catechism ", namely the "Cathecismo Pequeno" of the Diogo Ortiz de Vilhegas , who appeared in Lisbon in 1504, investigated.

In his research focus on the history of religion , Bellinger has dealt intensively with the religions of mankind and the myths of peoples. His research results are available in the "Religious Guide", which has been published several times and translated into five languages, and in the "Lexicon of Mythology", which is also widely printed and translated into four languages. His comprehensive work “Sexuality in the Religions of the World” makes a contribution to the sexual ethics of religions. He has also written numerous articles in his field for radio, television and the press.
