life and work

Krings was a renowned exponent of modern transcendental philosophy . The idea of freedom as the basis for human reason was the central motif of his scientific and public work. A political system that does not recognize freedom as a basic principle of human existence was a coercive system for him. He once said: "Freedom is not a political program, but a name with which people give themselves dignity."

After his habilitation , Krings was initially an adjunct professor in Munich. During this time he was u. a. Managing Director of the General Society for Philosophy (1957–1960). Born in Aachen, he worked as full professor and director of the Philosophical Institute at the University of Saarbrücken from 1960, and from 1968 in the same function at Munich University , where he retired in 1980 .

From 1970 to 1975 he was chairman of the German Education Council . In 1973 he was also awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. In the same year he succeeded Alois Dempf as chairman of the commission of Schelling's writings . Krings also served as General Secretary of the Görres Society (1979–1991). In 1992 he received the Ring of Honor of the Görres Society .

From 1970 to 1995 Krings was the editor of the Philosophical Yearbook .

In 1973 he was elected a full member of the Philosophical-Historical Class of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

Since his studies in Munich he was a member of the Catholic student union Rheno-Bavaria .

Krings had been married to the stage and television actress Inge Birkmann since 1949 , who died only 10 months after him on December 19, 2004.

The actor, director and writer Joachim Meyerhoff is his step-grandson.

Quote

He had been friends with Willi Graf since 1936. In the memorial lecture in 1983 he paid tribute to the resistance (the “denial”) of the White Rose against the Nazi demon and terror: “The White Rose is a sign. The death of friends is a sign. Signs are difficult to interpret. But on this side of all interpretation we have a sign of hope. It guarantees that when we are finished with our human actions, another action is possible - an action that is inviolable and immortal. "
