Manfred Schmitt, Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology at Saarland University

Manfred J. Schmitt (born February 16, 1959 in Mainz ) is President of Saarland University and Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology .

Vita

After studying biology at the University of Mainz , Schmitt received his doctorate from 1986 to 1988 at the Institute for Microbiology and Wine Research there. After completing his doctorate, he spent two years researching as a postdoc and fellow of the German Research Foundation in the USA at UMass Medical School in Worcester (Massachusetts) . In 1990, he returned as a research assistant returned to the University of Mainz, where he joined in 1993 for microbiology habilitated . Since 1996 he has held the chair for molecular and cell biology at the Center for Human and Molecular Biology (ZHMB) at Saarland University. From 2009 to 2014 he was Vice President for Teaching and Studies and has been President of Saarland University since March 2017, succeeding Volker Linneweber . Schmitt took up his post on March 1, 2017.
