Hellmuth Sitte (born May 6, 1928 in Innsbruck ; † December 6, 2018 there ) was Professor of General Biology.

Live and act

Hellmuth Sitte's father was a professor of classical archeology in Innsbruck. He grew up with his brother Peter in Innsbruck, was drafted into the Wehrmacht at the age of 16 and was seriously wounded, with his right leg having to be amputated.

Sitte studied natural sciences and soon researched together with his brother in the field of electron microscopy and ultrastructural research at the level of organismic cells . Both were significantly involved in establishing this research area in Europe.

At the beginning of his university career, he received a call to Harvard University , which he refused. After completing his habilitation at the University of Heidelberg , he worked at the Medical Faculty of the Saarland University from 1963 , where he became full professor of cytology and electron microscopy in 1966 . From 1972 his chair was called "General Biology for Medicine".

Sitte, who refused several appointments, including to the Academy of Sciences in Vienna to set up an institute for molecular biology, published around 100 scientific papers and held well over 200 patents in the field of ultramicrotomy and low-temperature technology .

From 1969 to 1973 Sitte was rector of Saarland University. He was also a liaison professor of the German Research Foundation and the German National Academic Foundation .

Honors

Sitte was a member of numerous scientific societies .
