Paul Müller (born October 11, 1940 in Gersweiler ; † May 30, 2010 ) was a German biologist and biogeographer.

Life

Müller studied biology, biochemistry and paleontology and received his doctorate in 1967 summa cum laude as Dr. rer. nat. In November 1970 he completed his habilitation with the writing The Dispersal Centers of Terrestrial Vertebrates in Neotropical Realm ; he received the license to teach biogeography .

In 1971 he was appointed to the newly established chair for biogeography at Saarland University. In Saarbrücken he also held the office of university president from 1979 to 1983. In addition, he was elected President for Research of the West German Rectors' Conference in July 1982 . In 1986, he rejected an appointment to the second Senate of Eberhard Diepgen as successor to Environment Senator Horst Vetter . From 1989 Paul Müller was head of the Center for Environmental Research at Saarland University. On October 1, 1999, he moved to Trier University , where he became head of biogeography . He held this position until March 31, 2006.

Paul Müller was a committed hunter, albeit a late one. As Vice State Hunters Master of the Saarland, he significantly shaped the hunting-related positions of the state and federal association. In this position he was initially a staunch, more structurally conservative opponent of the hunting reforms initiated by the head of the Saarland's highest hunting authority, Wilhelm Bode . In a joint working group of the state government and the Association of Hunters of the Saarland, however, both negotiators agreed in 1992 on several reform approaches in hunting that are still leading today. Among other things, they agreed on a draft of the new version of the hunting law, which, thanks to Müller, received the unanimous approval of the hunters, but despite his extensive reform approaches, due to the fact that the head of the hunting authority was dismissed by the Lafontaine government in the course of the Lafontaine affair, it was no longer put into effect.

Muller was for many years Liaison Officer for the fellows of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation at the University of Trier. He died surprisingly in his hunting ground.

Müller had been married since 1964. He had three daughters and one son.
