Chiang Mai University has four campuses, which together cover approximately 249 hectares.

The central campus is located about five kilometers west of Chiang Mai city center below Doi Suthep Mountain . It is lined with shopping streets on three sides and the Chiang Mai Zoo is on the fourth side . Since there was still pristine forest here in the 1960s and environmental protection was important, the university buildings were built between the trees, so that today there is a contemplative impression. A little closer to the city center is the Medical Complex, where the Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy are combined. The Maharat Nakon Chiang Mai Hospital , called Suan Dok by the locals, is also located here.

About five kilometers south of the center of the university is the Mae Ha campus, where the departments of veterinary medicine and agricultural industry are located.

Chiang Mai University's latest acquisition is the Lamphun Sri Bua Baan campus in Lamphun Province . This campus is located about 55 kilometers south of the main site near the industrial center of Lamphun. It covers more space than the other campuses combined and is currently (2008) being expanded. Further research and teaching facilities for nursing, architecture, engineering, humanities, social studies, agricultural industry, agriculture, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, natural sciences and for the graduate school are being built here.
