The Prince of Songkla University ( Thai มหาวิทยาลัย สงขลา นครินทร์ , RTGS Mahawitthayalai Songkhla Nakkharin ; "Prince of Songkhla University"; English Prince of Songkla University , SPU) is a state university in southern Thailand . The university is named after Prince Mahidol Adulyadej , Prince of Songkhla, the father of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX).

history

The university was founded in 1967 as the third state university outside the capital Bangkok. In 1968 it moved to Pattani as the University of Southern Thailand. In 1971, the Hat Yai campus opened, and today more than 50% of students study there. Phuket opened in 1977, Surat Thani in 1980 and Trang in 1991. Today, Prince of Songkla University has more than 36,000 students.

The Prince of Songkla University is spread across several provinces of southern Thailand. In addition to the largest campus in Hat Yai , Province of Songkhla , there are more university campus in Pattani , Phuket , Surat Thani and Trang .

The main central campus in Hat Yai is home to 15 faculties, a graduate school , an international college, the central library, the Maha Chakri Natural History Museum and the Center for Biodiversity of Southern Thailand.

The university is a member of the ASEAN university network .

Ranking

In the QS World University Ranking 2013, the Prince of Songkla University was one of the five most prestigious universities in Thailand in some subjects (especially in the humanities, medical and biological sciences). It did particularly well in agriculture and forestry, where it took third place nationwide and is one of the world's 150 leading universities.
