The Mahamakut University ( Thai มหาวิทยาลัย มหา ม กุ ฏ ราช วิทยาลัย , RTGS : Mahawitthayalai Mahamakut Ratchawitthayalai; English Mahamakut Buddhist University, MBU) is one of two Buddhist universities in Thailand. Its headquarters are located on the grounds of Wat Bowonniwet in Bangkok . She is assigned to the Thammayut order .
history
The history of Mahamakut University can be traced back over a century. In 1893, King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) founded the Royal Mahamakut Academy ( มหา ม กุ ฏ ราช วิทยาลัย ) in memory of his father, King Mongkut (Rama IV ). The goals of the academy were:
- an educational institution for Buddhist monks ( bhikkhu ) and novices to study the Pali language

The king visited the institute on October 26, 1893 to regulate its academic activities.
The academy was a resounding success from the start, so that on December 31, 1945, His Holiness the Supreme Patriarch Vajiranyanavong, in his capacity as President of the Royal Academy, and other Elderly Monks announced the inauguration of a Buddhist university under the official name of “Mahamakut Royal Academy Educational Council, the Buddhist University of Thailand ”. It is known as the first Buddhist university established in Thailand for monks and novices.
Since October 1, 1997, the two Buddhist universities, Mahamakut University and Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University , which is located in Wat Mahathat , are public universities.
Departments
Mahamakut University is divided into several departments and institutes: Faculty of Religion and Philosophy, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Human Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences.
International cooperation
Mahamakut University has announced a collaboration with the Oxford Center for Buddhist Studies at Oxford University .
In 2005 the MBU organized the "Fourth World Buddhist Summit". Emissaries from Buddhist associations from 23 countries took part, and the event had 3700 participants in total.
