history

On January 18, 1964, the Ministry of Education decided to found an offshoot of the College of Education for the training of teachers in northern Thailand . On January 25, 1967, the fourth campus of the university was opened in Phitsanulok . In 1974 the Pedagogical College was elevated to Srinakarinwirot University , to which the campus in Phitsanulok was assigned from that time on. Since July 29, 1990, the 400th anniversary of the accession of the eponym King Naresuan to the throne , the university has been independent.

A sub-campus of the university in Phayao Province was spun off as Phayao University in 2010 .

Naming

Initially, three names were shortlisted for the new university.

  1. Borommatrailokanat University (after King Borommatrailokanat , who ruled the kingdom of Ayutthaya from Phitsanulok for 25 years)
  2. Naresuan University
  3. Phitsanulok University

The university was finally named after King Naresuan the Great, who was born in Phitsanulok and made the Ayutthaya empire independent from the Burmese again in the 16th century . Since any use of royal names must be authorized by the ruling king, it was necessary that King Bhumbol Adulyadej agreed to the naming. This took place on October 7, 1989.

The campus was initially located near the old Phitsanulok airport . Already in the 1980s a move outside the city to the sub-district Thapho was sought. In the budget year 1987, 16 million Baht was made available for this.

After the laying of the foundation stone on July 22, 1988, the first building was the Mingkwan Building, today's main building with the central administration and the offices of the university president. The name for the building was chosen personally by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and means “benevolent”.
