The Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University ( Thai มหาวิทยาลัย สุโขทัย ธร ร มา ธิ ราช , English: Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University, short: STOU) is one of the two open-entry universities in Thailand . Its headquarters are in Pak Kret ( Nonthaburi province ).
history
Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University was established on September 5, 1978 . Since then, events have been held every year on September 5th to celebrate the founding. The university was the first Open University in Southeast Asia to have a tele-teaching system.
The name of the university goes back to King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) , who before his accession to the throne had the title "Prince Sukhothai Thammathirat" and was bestowed by King Bhumibol Adulyadej .
The colors of the university are green and gold. Green stands for the traditional color of Wednesday on which King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) was born, the gold color is the color for a successful future. The university tree is the Indian coral tree Erythrina variegata .
Organization and goals
In 2004 STOU had a total of 172,984 students.
The aim of the Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University is to make the principle of lifelong learning available to many sections of the population and to improve people's quality of life through increased training opportunities. To this end, the university offers distance learning opportunities, which include correspondence, radio broadcasts, television, and other means of giving students access to study opportunities without always having to go to a classroom.
The president of the university is Chailerd Pichitpornchai.
