Peter Lucas Colsman (* 13. March 1734 in Langenberg ; † 24. April 1808 ) was a German silk manufacturer in Bergisch Langenberg.

Life

Colsman had been an orphan since 1740 and therefore grew up with his godmother. He was educated in the house of the Bleckmann family and also received language lessons. From 1745 he lived with the Dahlmann family before he began a commercial apprenticeship in his native town in 1747. To expand his knowledge, he came to the von der Leyen company in Krefeld in 1752 as a "salesman" .

In 1755 he married and founded a silk factory in his hometown, today's weaving mill Gebrüder Colsman (Essen). He was also involved in the community and as a consistorial councilor. In 1764 he was appointed aldermen for life.

Through the lease of the two in Langenberg existing grain and Bark Mill in 1777, he expanded his business. Since 1794, when his sons joined, his company traded as "Peter Lucas Colsman & Sons". In 1802 the business passed to the sons Peter Lucas (1757–1816) and Johann Wilhelm (1767–1833) and has operated under the name "Gebrüder Colsman" ever since.
