Groppe studied history, German and educational science at the Ruhr University in Bochum from 1983 to 1991 , a degree that she completed with the 1st state examination. From 1991 to 1995 she was employed as a research assistant at the chair of the educational historian Detlef K. Müller in the research project "Antiquity in Modernity: The Discourse on the Meaning of Antiquity in Higher and Middle Schools for Boys and Girls in the 19th Century" in Bochum. From 1994 to 1997 she also worked there on the project to develop a “reform model for restructuring the master’s degree”. In 1996 she received her doctorate from Detlef K. Müller at the Ruhr University Bochum, followed by her habilitation in 2002 . In the summer semester of 2003, she represented the professorship for historical socialization and educational research at the Ruhr University in Bochum. In 2005/2006 she was professor for general educational science with a focus on historical educational research at the University of Dortmund . Since the winter semester 2006/2007 she has been a professor for educational science, in particular historical educational research, at the Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg.

Groppes specialty is historical educational research . In her dissertation, Die Macht der Bildung (The Power of Education) , published in 1997 , she dealt in detail with the George Circle , based on a comprehensive analysis of the sources , which she examined primarily with regard to its pedagogical and educational policy concepts. The more than 700-page work is one of the most comprehensive publications on the circle and was particularly well received in George research. In her habilitation thesis, Groppe then dealt with the silk manufacturer family Colsman from the Bergisches Land , to whom she also wrote a detailed study in two volumes with a view to the educational and social history of the period under study (Volume 1: 1649-1840; Volume 2: 1840– 1920) dedicated. In addition, she deals with the problem of socialization and the complexes of family, childhood and youth from a historical perspective. From her (educational) historical point of view, she also threw the spotlight on writers such as Friedrich Hölderlin , Paul Ernst , Rudolf Borchardt and the student movement of the 1960s .

Carola Groppe is co-editor of the yearbook for historical educational research and a member of the German Society for Educational Science , the Stefan George Society and the board of directors of the Stefan George Foundation .

She was one of the founders and main illustrators of the 2013 alternative election , from which the Alternative for Germany party emerged. In June 2015, she resigned from the party in protest against the political positions of Alternative für Deutschland on the issues of family, gender, immigration and Islam.
