The German Society for Educational Science (DGfE) is the union of working in research and teaching education researchers and educationalists in Germany. It was founded in 1964. The DGfE is based in Berlin.

history

The foundation was preceded by a number of "educational conferences", initiated by Julius J. Oppenheimer , head of the "Division of Cultural Affairs, Higher Education" at the High Commissioner for Germany (HICOG) . The first of these meetings took place on 29./30. May 1952 in Bad Wildungen , more followed annually, then after the founding of the DGfE in loose order until 1967. At these conferences school and teacher training issues are to be dealt with, but soon it was about the institutionalization of German educational science. The establishment of the professional association is closely related to the establishment of the Zeitschrift für Pädagogik in 1955. After the decision to found a German Society for Educational Science at the Hamburg conference in 1963, the constituent meeting followed on April 28, 1964 in Frankfurt am Main . The founding board consisted of Otto Friedrich Bollnow (Chairman), Josef Dolch , Andreas Flitner , Wilhelm Hansen, Erika Hoffmann , Heinrich Roth and Hans Stock. In accordance with the statutes, the board has been re-elected every two years since it was founded.

The first workshop followed on April 30, 1964; the statutes were passed on it. From the beginning, self-registrations were not possible, two guarantors were required for the new admission of a member - a principle that the DGfE currently (2018) still adheres to. The number of members developed in the first decade as follows:

Membership development of the DGfE in the first decade after its foundation
Deadline Number of members
04/30/1964 157
04/27/1966 "Almost 200"
10/01/1968 254
04/14/1970 324
04/11/1972 377
1973 "Over 500"

At that time, the internal organization of the company was also decided in commissions , some of which started their work with a delay.

In the second half of the 1960s, the DGfE dealt with the establishment of the diploma course in pedagogy in conjunction with the Conference of Ministers of Education and the Conference of West German Rectors . In June 1968 the “Core Study Recommendation” was adopted and made known. The DGfE has been a registered association since December 11, 1970 , and non-profit status was granted to it on September 7, 1971.

Goals and Membership

The aim of this scientific society is to promote science and research and to further develop education and training in the field of scientific pedagogy. This is achieved through various activities, in particular: the organization of specialist congresses (every two years), conferences, seminars and lectures, the promotion of intradisciplinary communication within the entire field of educational science, the editing and promotion of specialist publications, the initiation of research projects, the statement on public recommendations and scientific statements on questions of educational policy and educational practice, the information of the public about the status and development of educational science, the clarification of training and examination questions of the educational professions, the promotion of the next generation of scientists, the promotion of women working in educational science , the promotion of international understanding through cooperation with other national institutions and participation in international institutions (statutes of the DGfE).

The German Society for Educational Science currently has approx. 3,600 regular members and 54 honorary members due to "special services to the German Society for Educational Science". The appointment of Theodor Wilhelm as an honorary member at the DGfE Congress in 1984 failed.
