The Vantive Corporation (previously ProActive Software, Inc. ) is a former US software company that was active in the field of customer relationship management (CRM). Today Vantive is part of Oracle .

The company offered a variety of tools in the CRM area and developed programs for Sales Force Automation (SFA). However, the focus was on Customer Self Services (CSS) with the main product Vantive Support .

Other competitors in this market segment were Siebel Systems (now also part of Oracle), Clarify (first acquired by Nortel Networks ; now Amdocs ) and Baan Front Office Systems (now Infor Global Solutions ).

history

Vantive was founded in 1990 by Roger Sippl , who also founded Informix , and Steven Goldsworthy . The headquarters were in Santa Clara , California .

With Sybase Inc. , a manufacturer of databases , Vantive signed a VAR agreement on December 20, 1991 in order to be able to integrate its software into future products. A similar agreement was signed on March 26, 1992 with Oracle Corporation .

In 1992 the venture capital firm Opus Capital invested in the company. In the following years Opus Capital acted as a consultant and appointed John Luongo as the new CEO the following year . On August 14, 1995, Vantive was listed on the NASDAQ technology exchange under the symbol "VNTV" .

By 1995, Vantive had taken the lead in the CRM market, followed by Clarify and Siebel , but was overtaken two years later by Siebel, which was more focused on the more rapidly growing sales force automation market. In order to catch up, Vantive is now involved in the same segment and neglected its core business, Customer Self Services . Despite the reorganization of management and the sales department, Vantive did not succeed in catching up with Siebel. The takeovers of two small companies followed.

On August 27, 1997, Vantive announced that it had completed its acquisition of Innovative Computer Concepts Inc. (ICC), a leading manufacturer of customer service software. The purchase was made through a stock swap that gave ICC shareholders approximately 688,000 Vantive shares for all outstanding shares and options . The volume of the acquisition was approximately $ 21 million.

An agreement to acquire Wayfarer Communications Inc. , California , was signed on June 18, 1998. The agreement included the acquisition of Wayfarer Communications, a web technology company, for $ 11.5 million and 179,000 shares.

By 1998, Vantive had won over 850 customers and had sales of $ 163 million. At the end of the year, Thomas L. Thomas , previously CIO at 3Com , joined the company and took over management of the company until early 2000. A few months earlier, on October 11, 1999, PeopleSoft announced that it would buy Vantive, which it did was realized. The transaction had a market value of $ 433 million.

Products

The collection of various applications for customer service , helpdesk and quality assurance was referred to as Vantive Enterprise . The various programs could be run on many Unix operating systems as a server platform and had MS Windows , Mac OS or Motif as a graphical user interface ( GUI ) to choose from.

The company's first product was called Vantive Support and was released in July 1992. With this application the customer service and its activities, such as product support , customer care or customer complaints, could be handled. The following year a version with an Oracle database was offered as the back-end . The database management system ( DBMS ) was later supported by Informix .

Released in the fall of 1993, Vantive Quality was a product collection, distribution, tracking, and maintenance program . As of August 1994, Vantive HelpDesk was offered as an internal help desk application for recording and handling all kinds of employee issues.

In May 1995, a software called Vantive Sales for sales and marketing was launched. It enabled customers to manage the entire activity before ( pre -sales ) and after ( after-sales management ) the sale of their products.

On February 20, 1996, a new major release of the Vantive Enterprise 5.0 program package with numerous extensions and improvements to the existing components was announced. Vantive FieldService was a new program that made it easier to organize the customer's field service. Vantive Customer was another software that was aimed at the customer service market.

License fees for Vantive's software were calculated per server and according to the maximum number of users who could access the respective application at the same time.
