history

Suranaree College was founded in 1984 by the Ministry of University Affairs (now the Office of Commission on Higher Education , part of the Thai Ministry of Education) as Suranaree College. Due to the lack of universities in the region, the Cabinet of the Government of Thailand under Prime Minister General Chatichai Choonhavan decided on September 13, 1988 to appoint five regional colleges as universities, including the Suranaree College. The new status and name of the Suranaree University of Technology was officially announced in the Royal Gazette on July 27, 1990 ; this became legally binding three days later on July 30, 1990. Wichit Srisa-an became the head of the new Suranaree University. The SUT was the first publicly autonomous university in Thailand.
