The State University of Yokohama ( Jap. 横浜国立大学 , Yokohama kokuritsu daigaku , short Yokokoku or YNU ) is a state university in Japan . The campus is located in Tokiwadai, Hodogaya-ku , Yokohama in Kanagawa Prefecture .

history

The university was founded in 1949 through the merger of the following state technical schools:

  • the Yokohama Business School ( 横 浜 経 済 専 門 学校 , Yokohama keizai semmon gakkō , founded in 1923),
  • the Yokohama Technical Center ( 横 浜 工業 専 門 学校 , Yokohama kōgyō semmon gakkō , founded in 1920),
  • the Normal School Kanagawa ( 神奈川師範学校 , Kanagawa shihan gakko , founded in 1876), and
  • the youth normal school Kanagawa ( 神奈川 青年 師範学校 , Kanagawa his shihan gakkō , founded in 1920).

At first the new state university wanted to be called “University of Yokohama”, but two universities (municipal and private) also wanted the name. So everyone used different names: Yokohama State University, Yokohama Municipal University, and Kanagawa University .

In 1949 it had five locations (4 in Yokohama and 1 in Kamakura ), which it inherited from the former technical schools. In 1974 today's Tokiwadai campus was reopened; it was more of a golf course. In 1979 the locations were combined to form the Tokiwadai campus.
