Peter Sitte (born December 8, 1929 in Innsbruck ; † September 13, 2015 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German biologist . He was a professor at the Institute for Biology II at the University of Freiburg.

Life

Peter Sitte studied botany , chemistry , experimental physics and philosophy at the University of Innsbruck , where he in 1954 with a thesis on the fine structure of plant cell walls doctorate . In 1958 he was with a study on the ultrastructure of root cells of the pea habilitation .

Sitte followed a call to Heidelberg University , where he was entrusted with the management of the electron microscopy laboratory at the Botanical Institute and was appointed associate professor for cell theory and biological electron microscopy. 1966 was the custom a reputation as a professor of cell biology at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg . In Freiburg im Breisgau , Sitte and his colleagues worked on various areas of plant cell biology, such as the chromoplasts in the cells of flowers and fruits and the gerontoplasts of autumn leaves. Further research objects were the complex plastids of the Cryptomonads and the associated problem of cell evolution through secondary endocytobiosis .

He founded the journal Biology in Our Time . From 1977 to 1978 he was chairman of the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors .

His brother Hellmuth Sitte was also an electron microscope operator.
