Hans Breuer (politician)

Johann "Hans" Breuer (born September 16, 1930 in Troppau ) is a German local politician of the SPD . He was Lord Mayor of Augsburg from 1972 to 1990 .

Life

Hans Breuer came to Westendorf (Augsburg district) in 1946 as an expellee from Upper Silesia . He later moved to Augsburg, where he had a job in the NAK after an apprenticeship as an electrician as a company electrician . In 1953 he went to the textile-clothing trade union as an intern and later became trade union secretary.

On February 20, 1956, he married his wife Sieglinde. The marriage produced a son.

Political career

In 1956, the then trade union secretary was elected to the Augsburg city council. He was a member of this until 1990. From 1966 to 1972 he was a sports advisor and 3rd mayor. In 1972 he was elected Lord Mayor of Augsburg. He held this office until 1990. The splendid 2000th anniversary of Augsburg in 1985 falls during his term of office.

The Social Democrat won three votes against CSU applicants for the OB mandate. In 1972 Breuer triumphed over the local politician Ludwig Kotter , in 1978 over the Landtag member Hermann Knipfer and in 1984 over the Bundestag member Stefan Höpfinger .

During Hans Breuer's terms of office, he was involved in the establishment of the Central Clinic and the University of Augsburg . Together with the district administrators of the surrounding districts, the Augsburg Transport Association was founded . As a sports advisor, he set the course for holding the Olympic canoe slalom competitions on the Augsburg ice canal in 1972. In the same year, the politician opened the newly built Spickelbad.

Honors

1980 Breuer received the Liebieg Medal from the Reichenberg home district in Augsburg . In 1983 he was awarded the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany. He was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit on July 4, 1991. Breuer has been an honorary citizen of the city of Augsburg since October 26, 1991 . The University of Augsburg made him an honorary senator in 1992.
