Parish Church of St. Boniface

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Bonifatius is a church building in the Essen district of Huttrop , which was listed on November 21, 2019. The church belongs to the parish of St. Gertrud in the city center .

History and architecture

In Huttrop, church services have been held since 1892 in the church of the Franz Sales House north of Steeler Chaussee (today Steeler Strasse), which was consecrated as St. Maria Rosenkranz at that time . Between 1928 and 1929, the first St. Bonifatius parish church was built opposite the main entrance of the old cemetery in Huttrop , which was considered particularly modern at the time. It was shown on the cigarette picture inserts that were common at the time. The round tower ended in a long, thin point. The house with 230 seats was too small for the 8,000 Catholic community. It therefore had to be abandoned and broken off in 1965 for reasons of capacity. Since it was not possible to add or build a larger church on the site of this church, a new one was built at the current location, south of Steelerstrasse and west of Moltkestrasse.

The simple building complex was built in brick based on a design by Emil Steffann . The foundation stone was laid at Whitsun 1960, followed by the inauguration by Bishop Franz Hengsbach on July 15, 1961. The three-aisled basilica is, based on early Romanesque buildings, accessible from the east via a small atrium with baptistery and sacristy . The absence of representative elements such as the bell tower and the main entrance is characteristic of Steffann. The gable is crowned with a small rosette-shaped sandstone with a cock on top.

The interior is a typical community hall for the time it was built, with an unobstructed view of the slightly elevated altar in front of the small apse . The exposed brickwork is richly structured in sloping pilasters . Small arched windows only dimly illuminate the room.

Furnishing

In the course of the changes to the liturgical reform by the Second Vatican Council , the renovation of the choir began on July 6, 1969. The previous celebration altar, on which the tabernacle was located, became a high altar that now stands in front of the conche . The new celebration altar is now in the center of the chancel. The new octagonal and 2.76 meter high tabernacle is on the left of the room, and the ambo that was there has been moved to the right. This renovation was completed on December 19, 1971.

The bronze lid of the baptismal font was created by Helga Kühnapfel, the story of the baptism of the Ethiopian chamberlain by the apostle Philip is told. The Pietà in the baptistery dates from the 15th century. The small altar table was made of almost white French Savonnière stone . The gem cross in the cone is an enamel work by Lioba Munz OSB from 1965. The Boniface figure was carved in the 13th century and the cross in the handling was made in the 16th century.

In the west of the church there is an organ from the Walcker workshop (II / 26) on the ground floor with Principal 16 'in the prospectus. The instrument was completed in 1971.
