history

In the years 1954 to 1958, at the suggestion of the Düsseldorf Chamber of Skilled Crafts, two courses for master craftsmen were carried out at the commercial training institutes of the city of Essen, which were intended to give them access to vocational training. These two-year courses gave the successful participants the full university entrance qualification. From this joint attempt, following the example of the Oberhausen “Institute for obtaining the university entrance qualification” founded in 1954, the two institutes in Essen (sponsored by the city) and in Düsseldorf (sponsored by the Chamber of Crafts) grew.

school-building

Today's Ruhr-Kolleg at Seminarstrasse 9-11 was built in 1913-14 based on a design by the architect Edmund Körner for the Protestant teachers' seminar. It is a carefully designed three-storey brick building in the reformist style with classicist elements; insofar artistic reasons speak in favor of preservation and use. As a historical reference to the founding phase of state teacher seminars and preparatory institutions in the Wilhelmine Empire , the building has significance for history. Because of the modernization of the classrooms, the internal protection is limited to the stairwell and the auditorium. The entry was made in 1985.

Support association

The Friends of the Ruhr-Kolleg Essen e. V. was founded in 1996.

criticism

In November 2018, the school or the type of school was classified by the city as unattractive and an open-ended examination was initiated. The city made this categorization because the number of visitors has stagnated in recent years. According to the city of Essen, the number of high school graduates fell from 351 (2011/2012) to 163. The legal minimum size for this type of school is 240 pupils, which the school achieves by offering preparatory courses for refugees. The school rejects the criticism because it has never fallen below the legal requirements in 60 years and participants in the preparatory courses are regular students who would later also achieve higher school qualifications.
