Disocactus macdougallii is a species of the genus Disocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the North American botanist Thomas Baillie MacDougall (1895–1973). A Spanish common name is "Nopalillo".
description
Disocactus macdougallii grows strongly branching with spreading shoots , which are elongated, linear and bright green. They are 15 to 45 centimeters long, have toothed edges and are partially tapered at the base with a blunt tip and 2 to 5 centimeters wide. The areoles are small and thornless.
The flowers appearing to the side are funnel-like wide, bright purple-pink and 7 to 8 inches long and about 6.5 inches in diameter.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Disocactus macdougallii is widespread in the Mexican state of Chiapas near San Cristóbal de las Casas above 2500 meters.
The first description as Lobeira macdougallii was in 1944 by Edward Johnston Alexander . Wilhelm Barthlott introduced the species to Disocactus in 1991 .
Synonyms are the following described species: Lobeira macdougallii Alexander (1944), Nopalxochia macdougallii (Alexander) WTMarshall (1946) and Heliocereus macdougallii (Alexander) Doweld (2000).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
