Ernst Friedrich Bange

Ernst Friedrich Bange (born May 11, 1893 in Huttrop near Essen , † July 2, 1945 in Berlin ) was a German art historian .

Life

He was the son of the draftsman Friedrich Georg Bange (1867–1943) and Emilie Bange, b. Tackenberg (* 1859). After attending elementary school and secondary school in Essen until he graduated from high school in 1912, he studied art history, classical archeology, history and philosophy in Berlin , Munich and Kiel . From 1914 to 1918 he took part in the First World War and received the Iron Cross, 2nd and 1st class. In 1919 he received his doctorate in Kiel under Georg Vitzthum von Eckstädt .

From 1921 he worked at the sculpture collection of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin , initially with a contract for work, from 1927 as a research assistant, from 1930 as curator. In 1936 he was awarded the title of professor. After Theodor Demmler's death , he became head of the sculpture department in July 1944. In 1945 he committed suicide.

Bange was in a relationship with the art historian Ernst Günter Troche .

Scientifically, he was mainly concerned with the sculpture of the Renaissance , in particular with small sculptures .
