Architecture and history

The strikingly concave, seven-story building was built between 1957 and 1959 as one of the first high-rise buildings in Essen after the Second World War . The architects Frank & Baumgartinger was responsible. It is located south of Essen's main train station and dominates Freedom Square , which has been called Europaplatz since the end of 2017 . The house, which is not under monument protection, was included in a report by the monument protection authorities as part of the inventory of high-quality buildings from the 1950s in Essen .

In the first decades, the house had the characteristic Nordsternversicherung lettering on the roof, which is what gave the house its name in the vernacular. As the original builder, Nordsternversicherung was ultimately taken over by Axa . In 1991 the Essen-based energy company RWE acquired the house and owned it until 2012 when the project developer Kölbl Kruse bought it and rented it to RWE. The lease lasted until 2017.

The renovation of the building, which took several years, was completed in June 2016, with the facade appearing in natural stone look based on the original condition. The house will continue to be used as an office building in the future.
