Ladis Schwartz
Ladis Schwartz (* 1920 in Timișoara , Romania ; † 1991 in Bonn ) was a Romanian-German sculptor.
Life
From 1938 to 1940 Ladis Schwartz attended the higher arts and crafts school in Budapest . From 1941 to 1944 he was interned as a Jew in a labor camp in Romania. In 1954 he married the painter Otilia Grosu. Since 1968 Schwartz lived in the Federal Republic of Germany, first in Siegen , from 1978 in Bonn .
The sculptor is represented with works in public spaces in a number of cities. So in Bucharest ( Romania ), Haifa ( Israel ), Bonn , Essen and Siegen .
In 1987 Ladis Schwartz initiated the restoration of the Rheineck Jewish Cemetery , located below Rheineck Castle near Bad Breisig . This was abandoned in 1979 after the then new owner of the castle had a barrier fence drawn through the cemetery and the tombstones were moved to the cemetery on the Kesselberg north of Bad Breisig . With the support of the Catholic Church and the international sensation that a corresponding publication in the Jerusalem Post caused, an agreement was reached in 1988 with the castle owner and the city of Bad Breisig. The tombstones were returned and the cemetery handed over to the city's care.
About his work
The sculptor is “primarily concerned with round sculptures on all sides, the volumes of which he masters powerfully and sensitively. By compression and expansion of the forms that are as vegetative as constructive, he finds symbols of the natural unity of all what has become and the becoming. " .
