The Roman route was a 315 km long long- distance cycle path in North Rhine-Westphalia and was opened in 1993. Until the spring of 2013 it led from Xanten on the Lower Rhine along the Lippe (Lippia) to the Hermannsdenkmal near Detmold and tried to trace the path of the Roman legions involved in the Varus Battle (although according to the latest findings the battle did not take place near Detmold). This is where the name Roman route is based . In the spring of 2013, the new Römer-Lippe-Route replaced the Roman route.
Route
The Roman route ran in large parts along the Lippe and a former military road of the Romans , which was built from 12 BC. It was supposed to serve as a shipping route to secure the Lippe and to conquer the Germania on the right bank of the Rhine . The starting point was the Vetera legionary camp located in the province of Germania inferior near Xanten, other camps along the route could be found in Anreppen ( Roman camp Anreppen ), Holsterhausen ( Roman camp Holsterhausen ), Haltern am See ( LWL Roman museum ), Olfen ( Roman camp Olfen ) and Bergkamen- Oberaden ( Roman camp Oberaden ) can be detected.
The route was marked by a green helmet ( Galea ) on a mostly hexagonal sign; a green arrow pointed from Xanten to Detmold, a red arrow in the opposite direction. Low inclines and easy-to-drive paths made the route family-friendly; Significant sights, historic town centers, museums as well as thermal and fun pools and other leisure facilities along the way made the route not only interesting in terms of landscape.
