Look and use of the Galea

Galea and Cassis were the Latin names for the helmets worn by Roman soldiers . While a cassis was always made of metal, the galea was originally a leather hood. Later, in Republican times, this expression was also used to describe helmets made of aes ("bronze", usually a brass alloy) or iron. From then on, leather helmets were no longer worn and are also not known from archaeological finds.

In the course of development, different types of helmets have been developed.
