The Hamm State Horticultural Show was the first State Horticultural Show in North Rhine-Westphalia in 1984 . The event, which lasted several months, took place on the site of the closed Maximilian colliery and attracted around 1.3 million visitors. Following the state horticultural show, the “ Maximilian Park ” was set up on the 22-hectare site and is still open today. The “ Transparent Elephant ” on the LGS site has now become a symbol of the city of Hamm.

history

In the Maximilian colliery , coal production was finally stopped in the 1940s. The municipality of Werries then planned to revitalize the fallow land. Supported by funding, a new town center was to be built. However, this was prevented by the local reorganization in 1975. In this context, Werries became part of the Hamm-Uentrop district of Hammer . In 1978 the city applied to host the first state horticultural show in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Decades of fallow land had developed a distinctive vegetation that also served as a retreat for animals threatened with extinction. After Hamm was awarded the State Horticultural Show in 1980, the city began to map areas worthy of protection. In the following year, construction work began on an amusement park, where many of the former colliery buildings have been preserved.

The State Garden Show was open from April 14th to September 30th, 1984. Since then, the site has been operated as the " Maximilian Park ".

After the positive experiences from the first state horticultural show, the city applied to host the LGS 2014 . The application was unsuccessful, however, and the city of Zülpich was selected instead .

Buildings

The best-known building at the State Garden Show in Hamm is the “ Glass Elephant ”, which the artist Horst Rellecke built from the former coal washing plant . The elephant is primarily used as an observation tower and landmark. In addition, the elephant became the city's mascot, which is still sold today as a plush toy (“Maxi”).

Many other buildings of the former colliery were used for exhibitions.
