The State Horticultural Show Bad Lippspringe 2017 was the 17th State Horticultural Show of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia . On June 1, 2011, the city of Bad Lippspringe was awarded the contract by the NRW Environment Ministry , which could choose from five applications.

The garden show took place from April 12 to October 15, 2017. The motto was "Flower splendor & forest idyll". It was the first garden show in North Rhine-Westphalia to be held in front of a forest backdrop. The spa town of Bad Lippspringe was the smallest place to date that was awarded the contract to host the North Rhine-Westphalia State Horticultural Show. The exhibition was located on the grounds of the Kurwald and in the Arminius Park , connected by a promenade in the city center. Flower shows and themed gardens were the central attraction on the 33 hectare grounds of the State Garden Show.

The state horticultural show consisted of two areas. The area north of the city comprised the areas of Kaiser-Karls-Park and Kurwald with an area of about 30 hectares. Within the city, in close proximity to the Lippe spring , the second area was in Arminius Park (3 hectares). The Arminiuspark was partially enclosed for the period of the garden show.

Application process

The then NRW state government decided in 2006 to continue the state horticultural shows every three years between 2008 and 2017. For the 2017 event, five candidates submitted their documents to the responsible Ministry of the Environment by the application deadline on January 31, 2011.

The following cities and municipalities applied to host the 2017 State Garden Show:

  • Ahlen ( Warendorf district ): The application was under the motto “Ahlen im Trialog”, which refers to an eleven kilometer circular route that should be at the center of the state horticultural show. An existing cycle path on the Werse , the former railway line of the Westphalia colliery and the path along the Olfe should therefore form the connection between the sub-areas of the State Garden Show. The core area should form the site of the disused Westphalia colliery and include the event areas, among other things. A dump east of the colliery was intended as an adventure area.

  • Bad Lippspringe ( Paderborn district ): The feasibility study included plans to upgrade the Kaiser-Karls-Park and to make the adjacent park forest more tangible. The horticultural elements of the show should also find their place in the park and on the Schützenplatz. A tour should also include the city center and the Arminius and Jordan parks. In the application, this area was also intended for events. Along the tour, so-called health gardens were planned, which should provide incentives for exercise in the open air.

  • Soest , Bad Sassendorf , Möhnesee ( Soest district ): The concept envisaged three core areas that were to be connected by a garden show route. All facets of Westphalia should be presented to the visitors along this route . In addition, the historic old town of Soest was to be integrated and connected to the exhibition areas in Bad Sassendorf through the so-called Wiesenpark (on a former railway wasteland) as a continuation of the existing city park. There, the Haullepark with its historical building stock , the city center and the adjoining spa park should be made more attractive. In the municipality of Möhnesee, the core town of Körbecke should be better connected to the reservoir and a lake park should be created in the bank area.
Vreden application logo
  • Vreden ( Borken district ): The application concentrated on the area around the Berkel River . The Berkelsee should be redesigned as the southernmost core area. On the Berkelinsel, after the demolition of the commercial halls there, the construction of city gardens was planned. Areas for the Westmünsterland cultural and historical center and the hydropower plant were to be created at the port. It was also planned to integrate the Hamaland Museum and the existing city park. To the west, exhibition areas on the subject of energy and a sculpture park were to follow. The adjacent school campus was also part of the garden show concept.
  • Warendorf ( Warendorf district): The state horticultural show should have taken place in the area between the old town and the Emsseepark. In the old town, Wilhelmsplatz was to be redesigned and the connection to the northern districts and to the North Rhine-Westphalian State Stud Warendorf improved. A more attractive design of an industrial plant between the old town and the Emssee was planned, as was the integration of the existing Sophienpark . The Emsseepark should be modernized and almost completely redesigned.

After visiting the individual applicant cities, a ten-person evaluation committee selected Bad Lippspringe as the venue for the 2017 State Horticultural Show on June 1, 2011.

Bad Lippspringe was the first place to hold a state horticultural show in front of a forest backdrop. Under the motto "Flower splendor & forest idyll" there were flower shows, themed gardens and events between two parks and the city center.

The city of Bad Lippspringe was first mentioned in a document in 780 in the imperial annals of Charlemagne. Several imperial assemblies took place at the source of the Lippe, the longest river in North Rhine-Westphalia. Bad Lippspringe received its first town charter in 1445, today's town charter dates from 1921. With the discovery of the Arminius spring in 1832, the spa business started. Bad Lippspringe is the only place in North Rhine-Westphalia that is allowed to use the names medicinal bath and climatic health resort.

The efforts to organize LGS 2017 in Bad Lippspringe began with a preliminary study in June 2009. The feasibility study followed in September 2010 and the application in January 2011. The city prevailed against well-known competitors and was awarded the contract in June 2011. The first visible signs on the way to the state horticultural show were the decisions on the mascot "Lippolino" in May 2012 and the logo in January 2013. Following the landscape architects' competition from April to November 2013, construction work began on the garden show grounds in February 2014.

In the course of the state garden show, sustainable effects for the future of the city should be achieved. In this context, further funding, including from the urban development program, flowed to Bad Lippspringe in the years up to 2017. The city's focus was equally on day visitors, health tourists and citizens.

Support association

The Förderverein Landesgartenschau Bad Lippspringe 2017 eV was founded in January 2012 under the motto “We are the State Garden Show!” And its members helped to finance the large playground on the event site. The association attached great importance to the sustainable use of the state garden show facilities.
