In the past, North Rhine-Westphalia Day was only celebrated on round state birthdays in Düsseldorf . The 60th birthday of North Rhine-Westphalia was celebrated on August 23, 2006 with a live broadcast by Westdeutscher Rundfunk . The song was premiered for NRW . Then took place on 26./27. August 2006 the big citizens' festival took place on the banks of the Rhine in Düsseldorf . About ten thousand actors took part, and according to official figures, more than a million people attended the festival.
From 2007 to 2012, the event was held annually in changing cities, with the round regional anniversaries still to be celebrated in the state capital. The NRW-Tag 2013 was canceled without replacement because the city of Hückeswagen withdrew its application because of the increased safety requirements after the Love Parade accident . Instead, there was a municipal youth and family festival. In March 2013, the State Chancellery announced that it would only hold the NRW Day every two years for cost reasons.
A specific host city is awarded by the state cabinet; the cities can apply to the prime minister beforehand. The organizer is the host city or an agency commissioned by it. The state is contributing up to 300,000 euros.
In the past , the Schöne-Tag-Ticket NRW was valid for two days on NRW Day, and in 2011 even for three.
The NRW Day 2020 was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020.
