The European Street Theater Festival Detmold is a theater festival in Detmold in North Rhine-Westphalia . Every other year it takes place at Pentecost .

Street theater in Detmold

Street theater projects have been organized in the cultural city of Detmold since 1991 . Over the years, the city has developed an independent profile in the field of culture in public space, with the aim of establishing this in its sphere of activity. Regular street theater marathons should therefore also serve as a platform for those interested in street theater.

The festival presents national and international artists from different fields of art. The range of genres includes performance , installations , dance, music, figure and mask theater and the new circus. The artists use the city center and the area at Hangar 21 as a stage and appear there at fixed venues, as walking acts or as part of the parade. The festival has also provided space for open-air productions in recent years.

history

Initiated by the Chairos Theater Detmold, the first street theater festival in Detmold took place in 1991 under the name “1. Detmold picture disturbance theater marathon ”. For one day, two German and French groups played in the city's pedestrian zone. From 1992 onwards, further image disturbances followed every two years, which gradually offered an increasingly extensive program. In the 11-year history of the theater marathon, groups from France, the Netherlands, Russia, Estonia, Austria, Poland and Belgium were in Detmold for a guest performance.

In 2004 the “international street theater festival Holzminden and Detmold” took place as a follow-up project to Detmold's visual disturbance. The two cities cooperated in organizing the event, bringing international street theater groups to Detmold and Holzminden . In 2006 and 2008 the event continued as a series. The program of these festivals consisted of 12 groups, who played the entire city center on the Whitsun weekend.

Following on from the "international street theater festival Detmold / Holzminden", the city of Detmold organized an independent street theater festival from 2010, the "European Street Theater Festival Detmold". The event takes place every two years on the weekend of Pentecost and in 2010 recorded 65,000 visitors. In 2012 the festival ran parallel to the NRW-Tag . In 2014, for the first time since 2002, the organizer used the name image disturbance again for the festival, which has now grown to 16 performing groups.

Production center hangar 21

The "Hangar 21" is a former helicopter hangar of the British Army, which was converted into an art kite museum as a regional expo project in 2000 with financial support from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . Today the culture team of the city of Detmold uses the hall as a production location for international street theater productions. In connection with the biennial European Street Theater Festival, the hangar is available to 21 groups to further develop new projects.

The hangar rooms offer the opportunity to work on large-format productions regardless of the weather in a hall (main hall with approx. 3000 m² plus side rooms and outside areas). By locating several partner institutions (e.g. media production by Kultur und Art Initiative eV) under one roof, direct cooperation can be achieved.
