Clutch cover

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

With the clutch cover , the clutch housing is closed from the outside on internal combustion engines , in particular on motorcycles .

The clutch cover attached to the side of engines with a transverse crankshaft enables the clutch to be serviced , for example to replace worn clutch disks. The design , surface treatment and material used (e.g. carbon fiber reinforced plastic or magnesium alloys ) of the clutch cover are important design features of a motorcycle.

Even with dry clutches, the clutch housing is generally sealed in order to avoid corrosion and contamination of the clutch disks and bearings from dust, water and other external influences. In addition, the noise emissions caused by the mechanical processes in the clutch are reduced.

Open clutch cover

Regardless of the associated disadvantages, motorcycles with dry clutches (e.g. models from Ducati ) are often customized by using more or less open clutch covers. The open clutch cover allows a view of the clutch pressure plate rotating when the engine is running and changes the engine acoustics in a characteristic way . Small technical advantages result from the better cooling and the removal of the clutch disc wear.

The installation of an open clutch cover can be illegal depending on the national regulations.
