Smith Electric Vehicles was a manufacturer of vans and small trucks with electric drive . Founded in Great Britain and later based in the USA , the company was the largest manufacturer of electric commercial vehicles worldwide in 2007 .
history
Smith Electric Vehicles was founded in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1920 . It produced trolley buses for cities across the UK and for export to Commonwealth countries . In the late 1940s the company became one of the largest manufacturers of delivery trucks for dairies , known as milk floats . The Cabac , NCB and Elizabethan models were particularly popular . With the demise of the milk float in the 1970s, Smith Electric Vehicles diversified into the construction of other roadworthy electric delivery vehicles and was thus the pioneer for zero-emission commercial vehicles in Great Britain and the USA.
In 2004 the Tanfield Group acquired the SEV Group , the owner of Smith Electric Vehicles . In 2017, the company and the brand were dissolved.
