Corporate development

Founder and beginnings of the company

Geoffrey Robert James Borwick, 5th Baron Borwick (* 1955) was Chief Executive from 1987 to 2001 and then until 2003 Chairman of the British holding company Manganese Bronze Holdings plc, in which he also held the largest block of shares. The best-known subsidiary of Manganese Bronze is London Taxis International (LTI), a manufacturer of several series of black London taxis. At London Taxis International, in collaboration with the Canadian company Azure Dynamics, there were two test projects for the construction of electric vehicles, a London black taxi and an eMercury van project. LTI decided to focus on the production of taxis. After a failed attempt to take over the company entirely, Jamie Borwick resigned as chairman and eventually sold his family's stake to institutional investors. Instead, he founded Modec in 2004.

The first customer was the British retail chain Tesco.

Expansion to America with Navistar

In 2009 Modec agreed a joint venture with the US truck manufacturer Navistar International for the production of Modec electric trucks in North and South America . The name of the joint venture is Navistar-Modec EV Alliance.

insolvency

At the beginning of March 2011, Modec went bankrupt. In response, the head of Liberty Electric Cars Ltd. , Barry Shrier, initially stated that he wanted to help Modec out of a tight spot. Modec had to file for bankruptcy after a takeover by the American truck manufacturer Navistar failed. Obviously, Liberty Electric Cars did not want to or could not take over the Modec company as a whole: Liberty later only took over the twelve-person development team of the liquidated electric commercial vehicle manufacturer from the bankruptcy estate .
