Anton Gabele (born July 28, 1890 in Buffenhofen ; † August 13, 1966 in Koblenz ) was a German writer , teacher and educator .

Life

Anton Gabele was born in 1890 in the then Hohenzollern Buffenhofen, today a district of Meßkirch in the district of Sigmaringen , as the youngest of four siblings. His parents ran a small farm, a brick factory and the “Zur Sonne” inn in Buffenhofen.

From 1902 to 1908 he attended the Royal Catholic Gymnasium in Sigmaringen, which later became the Hohenzollern Gymnasium , where he passed his school leaving examination. He then studied German, French and English at the universities of Strasbourg , Geneva , Munich , Halle , Berlin and Bonn . In between he worked as a private tutor in southern France and Saxony . After completing his studies he came to Koblenz at Easter 1913 and taught as a secondary school teacher at the Kemperhof boys' school home until 1914. In 1919 he became a teacher appointed and taught until his services end at the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Koblenz, later Eichendorff-Gymnasium . In 1920 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil. starting with a dissertation on the "Influence of the pseudo-Plutarchic educational pamphlet on Italian and French humanists".

During the First World War he came to Flanders and France from August 1914 to October 1916 with a Koblenz pioneer battalion . As a lieutenant , he was seriously wounded near Verdun in May 1916 . During the First World War he married Katharina Berg, who was born in Koblenz (born February 13, 1890, † July 3, 1985). They had four sons in their marriage.

Anton Gabele's literary work began in his early years. His works were novels , stories and poems , a comedy , a novella and a children's book .

Anton Gabele died in Koblenz on August 13, 1966 and was buried there in the main cemetery. A street in the Asterstein district of Koblenz is named after him.

Awards

In 1930, he was awarded the German Storyteller Youth Prize for his novel "Im Schatten des Schicksals". As a special honor, he was awarded the Great Federal Cross of Merit in 1960 ; for his services to his homeland, he was given honorary citizenship in 1950 by his home community Dietershofen -Buffenhofen. A memorial stone on the house where he was born, the former "Gasthaus zur Sonne", in Buffenhofen, reminds of him. In Koblenz and Meßkirch there is an "Anton-Gabele-Strasse" each, in Haigerloch the "Anton-Gabele-Weg".
