List of the stock of passenger cars in Germany by segment and model series

The list contains the number of passenger cars in Germany as of January 1 since 2003 by segment and model series . Only cars with first registration from 1990 onwards are taken into account . The statistics are published by the Federal Motor Transport Authority .

methodology

Duration

The stock is, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) is the sum of all vehicle data stored in ZFZR and vehicle trailer (excluding the decommissioned vehicles) to the specified count time. Vehicles of the Federal Police and the Technical Relief Organization (THW) are included in the statistical analysis . In contrast, the vehicles of the Bundeswehr as well as vehicles with red or short-term license plates and with export license plates are not included . The counting of the vehicle population is carried out on the reference date of January 1st of each year.

Until January 1, 2007, the inventory included the registered vehicles as well as “temporary shutdowns”. These remained stored in the Central Vehicle Register (ZFZR) for 18 months . With the entry into force of the Vehicle Registration Ordinance (FZV) on March 1, 2007, the statistical recording method was changed. All types of deregistrations, including “temporary shutdowns”, have since been considered “decommissioning”. As a result, since January 1, 2008, the vehicle fleet has only included "flowing traffic" including the seasonal license plates .

Passenger cars, segments and model lines

The KBA shows the stock of passenger cars (cars) since 2003 broken down into segments and model series. The allocation of cars to model series is based on the vehicle identification number (VIN). If a common floor pan with the same FIN fragment is used for different model series, the separation of the model series is problematic. That is why VW Golf / Bora / Jetta, Seat Altea / Toledo / Leon and Porsche Boxster / Cayman were shown together.

The grouping of the model series into segments is carried out by the KBA in cooperation with the Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) and the Association of Importers of Motor Vehicles (VDIK). It is based on optical, technical and market-oriented characteristics. The structure of the segments as well as the grouping of the model series are continuously updated. The framework of the segments in 2003 consisted of mini , small cars , lower middle class , middle class , upper middle class , upper class , off-road vehicles , convertibles (incl. Roadsters) , VANs , utilities and others . In addition to all cars that were first registered before 1990 , Other also includes cars that cannot be assigned to a segment due to missing features (e.g. VIN fragment), as well as self-built, exotic cars, etc. In the following years the following restructuring or renaming took place in the framework of the segments:

• The RV segment was introduced in 2006.
• The lower middle class segment has been known as the compact class since 2006 .
• The Cabriolets (incl. Roadster) segment , which included open variants of the model series from the other segments, existed until 2006. Open cars have been classified in the other segments since 2007 and are combined with the corresponding closed variants.
• The sports car segment was introduced in 2007. The assigned model series were previously grouped in the other segments.
• The Vans segment was split up in 2007 into the mini-vans and large-capacity vans sub-segments .
• The segment SUV segment was 2,013 SUVs spun off. Among the SUV since then include all car models, as soon as they M1G -car approved pursuant to Directive 2007/46 / EC. Without a corresponding type approval, car models with an “off-road character” are shown in the SUV segment .

As a result of the EU-wide harmonization of vehicle documents , vehicles with a special purpose (mobile homes, ambulances and others) have been assigned to cars since January 1, 2006.

Designated model series

Model series with at least 1,000 registered vehicles that have been newly registered since 1990 and have an evaluable VIN are shown. Model series with fewer than 1,000 registered vehicles have been included in their segment under other since 2006 . This does not apply to model series which, according to the same statistical recording method, composition of the model series and segment allocation, had at least 1,000 registered vehicles in the previous year; these are nevertheless shown for comparison with the previous year's figure (except for 2014).

In individual cases, model series with fewer than 1,000 registered vehicles were also shown up to 2005, provided that their closed variants and convertible variants had at least 1,000 registered vehicles in total or had shown them in the previous year. Until 2004 or 2005, cabriolet variants that did not have at least the required 1,000 registered vehicles to be shown in the convertible segment were assigned to their closed variants in other segments. In 2005 and 2006, the convertible variants in question were assigned to the Convertible segment . There they were recorded under Other in 2006 , provided they still did not have at least 1,000 registered vehicles.

Notes on the list

The following list shows the inventory figures for each key date according to the statistical recording method, composition of the model series and segment allocation that was valid on the respective key date. Therefore, comparisons of the inventory figures on different reference dates are sometimes only possible to a limited extent.

Changes in the classification of model series into segments, which do not result from the methodological changes explained, are indicated in the following list in the sections on the respective segments.

¹ Citroën Berlingo , Fiat Doblò , Peugeot Partner and Renault Kangoo have been reported in the Utilities segment since 2006 .
