The Smart Forfour (English: "for four"; forfour as marketing spelling) is a five-door, four- or, if desired, five-seat small car model from the Smart brand . With this model, the brand expanded its product range to include an automobile with more than two seats. Sales of the five-seater began on April 24, 2004. The first generation (W 454) was developed together with the 6th generation of the Mitsubishi Colt , also launched in 2004 , with which the Forfour shared platform and technical components. Overall, around 40 percent of all parts were the same in both vehicles. Until production was discontinued in July 2006, the Forfour was built in Born ( Netherlands ) by Mitsubishi's subsidiary Netherlands Car BV ( NedCar ).
The second generation (W 453) developed jointly with Renault was released across Europe on November 22, 2014 and is manufactured by the Renault subsidiary Revoz in Novo mesto ( Slovenia ).
history
Smart anticipated total sales of 50,000 Forfour in 2004. With production fully up and running, 80,000 Fourfour should be sold annually. The sales target for 2004 was exceeded with 59,100 units. In 2005 only 43,700 Forfour were sold. Against the background of declining sales, DaimlerChrysler decided on March 24, 2006 to stop production. On the weekend of July 1st and 2nd, 2006, the last five-seater Smart rolled off the assembly line in the Netherlands. The model range for Smart has thus shrunk to a single series - the Fortwo .

The Forfour is 3.75 meters long and comes with an ESP with ABS as standard . The models up to and including 2005 are equipped with four disc brakes. From 2006, however, drum brakes were installed at the rear.
The trunk holds about 270 liters. Folding down the backrests of the rear seats creates a load space of 700 liters with an almost level floor. The rear bench seat can be moved 15 cm. The backrests are divided one third to two thirds and their inclination can be adjusted separately.
The engine is installed in the front and drives the front wheels. The suspension is basically set taut and sporty. There is an independent suspension with MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam axle at the rear .
The tank holds 47 liters, including five liters in reserve. Depending on the version, the Forfour consumes around 4.5 liters of diesel or 5.4 to 6.8 liters of super with a net weight of 965 to 1165 kg.
Engines
Stars in the Euro NCAP - Crash Test |
Otto
The gasoline engines for both vehicles were manufactured in Kölleda , Thuringia . At the start of sales there were two four-cylinder engines with a displacement of 1.3 liters and 70 kW (95 hp) and a 1.5 liter with 80 kW (109 hp). In June 2004, a 1.1-liter three-cylinder engine with 55 kW (75 hp) was added.
For the 2005 model year, the engine range was reduced to include a variant of the 1.1-liter engine with 47 kW (64 PS) and the designation 1.0 and to the top model Brabus with 1.5-liter displacement, turbo-charging and 130 kW (177 PS) added.
diesel
From 2004 two diesel engines ( OM 639 ) were offered, both with a displacement of 1.5 liters and 50 kW (68 PS) or 70 kW (95 PS). They are derived from the engines of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class , have common rail injection, but only three instead of four cylinders. The highest torque in the 50 kW model is already at 1600 rpm and is 160 Nm. In the more powerful engine, which only differs in its higher maximum boost pressure, it is 210 Nm at 1800 rpm. Both engines reach their maximum output at 4000 rpm. With the 50 kW engine, the vehicle reaches a top speed of 160 km / h, with the 70 kW engine it is 180 km / h. As usual with diesel engines, the maximum speed (above the maximum speed) is regulated by the injection control. Both models have an "electronic accelerator pedal", the position of which is electronically transmitted to the control unit.

The second generation of the smart forfour was presented to the public on July 16, 2014 and sold from November 22, 2014. The model was developed in cooperation with Renault and is technically closely related to the 3rd generation Renault Twingo (available since September 2014). The engine is installed in the rear and drives the rear wheels.
When designing the second generation, Smart was based on the shape of the previous model with the Tridion safety cell. At 3.49 m, the W 453 is around 26 cm shorter and, at 1.66 m wide, around 2 cm narrower than the first generation. The height increased by 10 cm to 1.55 m. The wheelbase is given as around 2.49 m, so it remains almost unchanged. Because of the rear engine , the steering angle of the front wheels is not restricted by drive shaft joints. As a result, the turning circle could be reduced from 11.15 m (left) and 10.65 m (right) to 8.65 m (between curbs) and 8.95 m (between walls), which is almost the same as the fortwo (451 series ) reached. The trunk holds 185 l up to the load cover, 255 l up to the roof and can be expanded to up to 975 l by folding down the rear seat. The maximum load is given as 425 kg. The enlarged radiator grille with a honeycomb pattern and a larger brand emblem is characteristic of the design of the second generation. The headlights have the shape of a diamond.
Two petrol engines were offered for the market launch, both with three cylinders in line: On the one hand, a 1.0-liter engine with an output of 52 kW (71 hp) and, on the other hand, a 0.9-liter turbocharged engine with an output of 66 kW (90 PS). At the beginning of 2015, a version of the 1.0 liter engine with an output reduced to 45 kW (61 hp) came onto the market. All engines meet the Euro 6 emissions standard and have an automatic start-stop system as standard.
In forfour a manual five-speed is standard. The twinamic 6-speed dual clutch transmission is available on request .
A special feature in this vehicle class is the standard Crosswind Assist, which is activated from a speed of 80 km / h. A driver airbag, a front passenger airbag, side airbags for the driver and front passenger and a knee airbag for the driver are used as standard airbags. Daimler is the first manufacturer in this class to install three-point seat belts with pyrotechnic belt tensioners and belt force limiters as standard in the back seat.
Brabus
The Brabus version of the forfour was presented at the Beijing Motor Show in April 2016 . The 0.9 liter turbo engine has an output of 80 kW (109 hp). The Brabus version went on sale in July 2016 at prices from € 20,520.
Electric Drive / EQ
An electric version for the second generation was presented at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. The market launch took place on March 10, 2017. The forfour ed can be recognized by the white lettering on the front and rear, and the Tridion cell and the exterior mirrors can be painted in green. The tachometer from the combustion engine was replaced by a power meter for the required power.
The electric motor is built by Renault in Cléon in northern France and has an output of 60 kW (81 hp). The maximum torque is 160 Newton meters, the maximum speed is regulated 130 km / h. The battery, built by Deutsche ACCUmotive in Kamenz, Saxony , consists of 96 cells from the supplier LG Chem and has a usable capacity of 16.7 kWh. The range according to the NEDC is up to 155 kilometers. The charging times can be reduced from six to 3.5 hours with a wallbox. A 22 kW fast charger has been available for a surcharge since spring 2018, which fills the battery up to 80 percent in 45 minutes. In future, the charging of the battery can be controlled with a smartphone app. For example, the interior can be cooled or heated in order not to put additional strain on the battery later while driving. The cheapest forfour ed was available when it was launched in March 2017 at a price of 22,600 euros.
In spring 2018, the name was changed to EQ , the electric sub-brand of Daimler.
Facelift
In the 4th quarter of 2019, the Forfour got a facelift. The facelift includes: new front and rear lights, as well as new interior and infotainment. The Forfour is only offered as an EQ; the version with combustion engine has been deleted.
