The Smart Roadster (internal: 452 series ) is a two-seater roadster from the Smart brand , an automobile brand of Daimler AG , which operated under the name DaimlerChrysler AG at the time the model was manufactured.

development

The Smart Roadster was supposed to be a vehicle with the typical characteristics of a smart (compact dimensions, driving pleasure and an innovative concept). To stand out from the Smart Fortwo , the new vehicle should be a roadster. Smart wanted to build on the classic, purist, predominantly English roadsters of the 1950s and 1960s. Development began in autumn 1998 under the direction of Jens Manske. In May 1999 Michael Mauer took over the design development management. Hartmut Sinkwitz followed him in May 2000.

A first show car was on display at the 1999 IAA . It was the roadster model variant and was built in just three months. It got the drive of the Fortwo and was thus ready to drive and fully functional. The presentation of this first show car was so successful that Smart decided to go into series production very quickly. At the Paris Motor Show 2000, a second show car was presented in the roadster-coupé model variant. The production vehicle was presented to the public in Berlin in August 2002 .

The market launch took place on April 11, 2003 as a 60 kW variant at a base price of € 18,610 for the roadster and € 20,240 for the roadster coupé. The 45 kW variant was submitted on May 26, 2003 at a lower entry price of € 14,990. Both versions of the Smart Roadster were produced in the factory called Smartville in Hambach (France) . The top versions were the Smart Roadster Brabus and the Smart Roadster-Coupé Brabus for a base price of € 24,950 and € 26,570 respectively. These Brabus models were also manufactured in Hambach (France) and offered an engine that had been upgraded to 74 kW (101 hp) and extended equipment.

Roadster
Roadster coupe

The roadster was offered in two designs, as a Smart Roadster and as a Smart Roadster Coupé , both with the series designation 452 and identical dimensions.

Both model variants are identical except for the trunk. The Roadster has a notchback, while the Coupé has a fully glazed rear structure (glass dome) that offers additional storage space. The side windows are made of Makrolon (polycarbonate). The trunk volume of this variant increases from 86 to 189 liters. When the soft top is open, the volume is reduced to 45 liters for the Roadster and 104 liters for the Roadster Coupé. Under the front hood, both versions have a second trunk with a volume of 59 liters.

Because of the changed structure, there are further differences between the two variants. The Roadster weighs 790 kg and the Roadster Coupé 810 kg (empty weight without driver). The Coupé also has a better C w value of 0.38 compared to the Roadster of 0.41 due to its "more closed" shape , which is also reflected in the top speed with the same engine power (Coupé 180 km / h, Roadster 175 km / h) precipitates.

Tridion safety cell and body panels

As with other models of the Smart brand, the so-called Tridion safety cell is the supporting base of the body of the Smart Roadster and Smart Roadster-Coupé . The other body parts and the units are attached to it. With a weight of 192 kg and made of high-strength steel alloys, it forms a stable passenger cell and thus offers a high level of crash safety . The Tridion safety cell is visible in the areas of the roof frame, the door sills, the B-pillars and the roll bar. The fenders and doors, the front hood and, in the case of the Smart Roadster, the tailgate as well as the other front and rear areas consist of the so-called body panels. They are made of plastic and are significantly lighter than steel and can be easily replaced.

The body panels were painted in the colors “Jack Black”, “Shine Yellow”, “Spice Red”, “Champagne Remix Metallic”, “Star Blue Metallic” and “Glance Gray Metallic”. The Tridion safety cell was only painted in silver or black and thus forms the two-tone look typical for Smart with the differently colored body panels.

Motorization

All roadsters are equipped with a 0.7 liter 3-cylinder suprex engine with turbocharging and an air-cooled charge air cooler . It is based on the engine block of the Smart Fortwo and, like it, meets the Euro 4 emissions standard . In contrast to the first generation Smart Fortwo, the displacement of the 3-cylinder engine has been increased to 698 cm³.

The engine of the Smart Roadster is available in three output levels with 45 kW (61 PS), 60 kW (82 PS) and 74 kW (101 PS). Due to the increased performance and the resulting forces, these three versions differ in some components.

The roadster version had either a 45 kW or a 60 kW engine. The coupé was only available with the 60 kW engine as standard. 25 pre-series models with the 45 kW engine were built of the coupé. Later they wanted to offer a cheaper version of the coupé, but this did not happen because of the production stop. The pre-production models, however, never officially went on sale and were mainly purchased by Smart employees. The 74 kW variant was reserved exclusively for the Roadster and Coupé models equipped by Brabus.

At its time, the smart motor was one of the smallest mass-produced car engines in which the principle of " downsizing " was consistently implemented. The engine block has an all-aluminum structure with a bedplate construction, ie it is divided at the level of the crankshaft. The crankshaft, connecting rod and piston are made from lightweight components and the ignition system is designed as a double ignition .

The engine is located directly on the rear axle and is installed there transversely and at a steep incline. This "lowered" construction comes from the sandwich floor architecture of the Smart Fortwo, in which the motor is hinted at under the seats. From this design and the turbocharging of the engine, the name "suprex" arose during engine development. The term is made up of “sub” and “prex”. "Sub" is derived from the special, inclined construction (English for the prefix unter-) and "prex" is a short form for compressor or compressor.

The engine has e-gas , an electronic throttle valve control . The accelerator pedal position is recorded electronically and the value is forwarded to the engine control unit, which moves the throttle valve electronically using a stepper motor .

The rear engine drives the rear wheels via an automated, sequential six-speed manual transmission. The gears can be switched automatically or manually. Either a shift lever in the center console or, depending on the equipment, shift paddles on the steering wheel are used for this.

Furnishing

interior

All Smart Roadsters are equipped with ESP (with start-up assistant) and ABS (with electronic brake force distribution and brake assistant) as standard . There were also airbags for the driver and front passenger as standard , as well as belt tensioners with belt force limiters . Side airbags in the seat back could be ordered as an option. Air conditioning was also available as standard for the Roadster Coupé.

The list of special equipment was extensive. Extras could be ordered individually and also in the following packages: comfort package (on-board computer, rain / light sensor, cruise control), safety plus package (fog lights, electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, side airbags), sports package (16-inch -Alloy wheels "spikeline", 3-spoke leather sports steering wheel with steering wheel gearshift), leather package (leather sports seats, seat heating), light package (daytime running lights, ambient light).

The Roadster has a choice of a hard top or an electric folding fabric top ( soft top ). The hard top consists of two halves and can be stowed in the rear trunk of the car if no soft top has been installed. It is made of fiberglass-reinforced polyurethane foam and weighs around 10 kilograms. The soft top is a specialty in this market segment, it can be opened and closed while driving at any speed. It folds into part of the trunk under the roll bar of the tridion cell. The entire process takes about 10 seconds. In addition, when the top is completely open, the side roof bars can be removed and stowed in the front trunk. The roadster with the 45 kW engine was fitted with a matt hard top as standard, the 60 kW version with the fabric top. The roadster coupé got a shiny hardtop as standard equipment. The matt hardtop and the fabric hood were also offered as optional extras.

The Smart Roadster does not have a spare wheel or a spare wheel, but a so-called breakdown kit with a compressor. A puncture spray is used to seal a damaged tire. A compressor supplied with electricity via the cigarette lighter inflates the sealed tire.

Brabus model versions

Smart Roadster Brabus Xclusive
Roadster coupe Brabus

In 2003, Smart founded a joint venture with the tuner and car manufacturer Brabus, Smart-Brabus GmbH, to produce tuned model variants of smart cars. The company was relocated to the Brabus headquarters in Bottrop and new manufacturing facilities were built.

The models Roadster Brabus and Roadster-Coupé Brabus are technically identical. The output of the engine has been increased by Brabus to 74 kW (101 PS). The two versions were additionally equipped with a sports chassis, 17-inch aluminum wheels, sports exhaust, special attachments (front spoiler, side skirts, rear spoiler with centrally arranged double-pipe exhaust, radiator grille), aluminum applications and accent parts in the interior and full leather interior (seats, Fittings, door panels). Later there was even a starter button in the gear knob. Both were only available in "Jack Black" and "Speedsilver Metallic".

From the 2005 model year there was another Brabus variant, the Brabus Xclusive model. This is actually the previous Brabus version, just with a few more extras. So the headlight cover and the rear center section were now painted in the body color and there was a little more leather in the interior. With the exception of the comfort package and the lighting package, they are almost fully equipped. The base price was € 26,270 for the Roadster and € 26,570 for the Roadster Coupé. After production was discontinued, these prices were even increased slightly. With the appearance of the Brabus Xclusive , the normal Brabus model was downgraded by slimming down the equipment. Among other things, the sports steering wheel with integrated shift paddles and the special Brabus add-on and interior parts, which were now available as accessories, were omitted.

Special models

Smart Roadster Collector's Edition

In the very short construction period of just under 2 years, the Smart Roadster has a number of special models. This was largely due to the fact that around 11,000 vehicles had not been sold at the end of production and they wanted to sell them faster with the special models. The Pitchblack , Bluestar , Blackstar and Ultimate models are existing vehicles that were older than 12 months.

From September 9, 2003, both body variants were available in the Bluewave Edition , which is painted in “Starblue Metallic” and has some extras from the Brabus models before they appeared in 2004. It was only offered with a 60 kW engine. The edition was limited to 500 vehicles. The list price for the Roadster was € 23,900 and for the Roadster Coupé € 24,500.

The Affection model was available from January 19 to May 7, 2004 , only as a roadster version. For the price of 16,930 € it offered no special equipment apart from a black interior, the 60 kW (82 hp) engine, a matt hardtop instead of the fabric top and spinline light alloy wheels, but almost the entire range of equipment could be ordered.

The "successor" is the Speedsilver model , which was produced from May 10th to July 30th, 2004. This special model was also only available as a roadster version with the 60 kW (82 hp) engine. It was completely painted in the color "Speedsilver Metallic" (body panels and tridion cell) and equipped with the fabric top, the additional instruments for boost pressure and engine temperature as well as an air conditioning system. The price was € 19,490.

From November 2004, the MTV Roadster , limited to 200 copies, was available for purchase. It was only available in Germany, painted completely black and equipped with CD radio and iPod (20 GB) including the iPod car kit. Apart from the further equipment with a sports package (leather steering wheel with shift paddles, 16-inch alloy wheels) and air conditioning, no extras could be ordered. The MTV Roadster was only available as a roadster in the 45 kW version for the price of € 14,990.

In September 2005 there was a new edition of the MTV Roadster with the same equipment as in 2004, but without the leather steering wheel with shift paddles. Instead, it has now also been offered in Austria and the price has dropped to € 13,990.

Only 58 pieces of the special Pitchblack model were built. The special model, only available as a roadster version, was painted completely in the color “Jack Black” and equipped with the 45 kW (61 hp) engine. It cost an inexpensive € 12,990 (€ 3,300 price advantage compared to a similarly equipped series model) and slowly initiated the sale of the model series.

The Blackstar and Bluestar models were available for both body versions and only differed in the paintwork and the light alloy wheels. They were equipped with the SB2 performance kit from Brabus, which meant an increase in performance to 66 kW (90 PS) and were well equipped for the price of € 15,990 (€ 5,100 price advantage).

The Brabus Roadster-Coupé as a special Ultimate model was based on the Racing Edition for England. Outwardly they did not differ from each other (completely “Racing Red” painted, tridion cell and roof bars in silver), only the elaborate interior was missing. In addition to other extras, there was the SB2 performance kit and attachments from Brabus for a price of € 20,990 (€ 7,200 price advantage). This special model was limited to 60 pieces and received a plaque with a consecutive number.

The last special edition is the Collector's Edition . It was presented at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show . 50 copies were to be built, but only 20 roadsters and 10 roadster coupés were made out of them. The technical basis was the Brabus Xclusive version. This contained full equipment and was refined with a matt brown special paint ("Mojave Brown") and a color-coordinated leather interior (Nappa cognac brown). The name of the special model was also embroidered on the seat backs and on the glove compartment.

Two special models have only appeared in England. The Roadster-Coupé Racing was modeled on the Roadster-Coupé V6 Biturbo prototype. The body panels and Brabus body parts were painted in "Racing Red", the Tridion cell and the roof bars were set off in silver. In the interior, too, parts of the cockpit were covered with Alcantara and accent parts were also painted red. It had the 60 kW engine, which, however, could be equipped with the SB2 performance kit at no extra charge and thus developed 66 kW (90 hp). 50 right-hand drive models were built, which cost the equivalent of € 25,500. In April 2006 the Finale special model appeared as a farewell model for England. It was offered in both body styles with leather upholstery for € 20,200 (Roadster) and € 21,200 (Coupé).

Roadster-Coupé Brabus V6 Biturbo

The Smart Roadster Coupé Brabus V6 Biturbo was a prototype project without road approval, with which the sole aim was to demonstrate the technical feasibility. Only 10 prototypes were built. They were first presented in July 2003 at the "100 Years Solitude Race" . It was a joint project between Smart, Mercedes-Benz (engine development) and Brabus. Two series engines, each with a displacement of 698 cm³, 3 cylinders and their turbochargers were connected to one another via a newly designed crankcase and installed in the rear of the coupé. The name V6 Biturbo is derived from this. This engine, which now had a capacity of 1396 cm³, developed 125 kW (170 hp) at 5500 rpm and had a maximum torque of 220 Nm at 2250–4500 rpm. With an empty weight without driver of 840 kg, this resulted in a power-to-weight ratio of 4.9 kg / PS, which helped the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.8 seconds. The top speed was 225 km / h.

Since the two engines in the rear of course took up more space, weighed more and produced more power, various other modifications were necessary. To make room for the two engines, the tank was placed in the front trunk. The special tank from racing was made of plastic, held 50 liters and cost around € 20,000. Since the standard transmission would not have withstood the higher torque, it was replaced by the new six-speed manual transmission from the ForFour CDI, which was limited to 5 gears and automated. The rear axle and suspension also had to be converted. The drum brakes on it were replaced by disc brakes. The ESP and ASR were thrown overboard, only the ABS remained. Power steering, air conditioning and a radio were omitted for reasons of space and weight. Instead of the radio, there was a red-painted cover that housed the start button for the engine. The most noticeable changes in the interior were the shell sports seats covered with gray suede and fitted with four-point harness straps. This suede with red stitching was also found on the door panels and on the instrument panel. The accent parts in the interior were painted to match the exterior paintwork in "Rosso Corse", a Ferrari color. Apart from the silver-red paint, the black flaps attached to the front fenders and the revised rear spoiler were the most noticeable external changes. Additional air inlets were worked into the rear side windows, which were simply taped shut when it rained. The engine had no cover, so the air inlets in the side windows provided better ventilation. The rear area was separated from the interior by a bulkhead made of carbon and a partition.

Due to the high mileage and the very high maintenance costs (the engine had to be removed for an oil change), there is only one drivable copy that is owned by the Brabus company. Another is in the factory museum in Hambach.

End of production

The roadster models were offered from April 2003. However, due to an unfavorable price policy (a maximum of 1% discount was set for all dealers) and due to the drive unit (motor with low power, gearbox with long switching pauses), they could hardly hold their own in the market.

In addition, there was a new business model for the Smart brand designed by DaimlerChrysler in order to position it more economically. As a restructuring measure, the DaimlerChrysler Board of Management decided in spring 2005 to discontinue production of the Smart Roadster at the end of 2005. On November 4, 2005, the last vehicle rolled off the assembly line. This model was a roadster coupé in the Brabus Xclusive variant in the color "Speedsilver Metallic" with the vehicle identification number WME 4523371L043091. Immediately after production, it was transferred to the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center in Stuttgart - Fellbach . A total of 43,000 pieces were produced. When production ended, around 11,000 vehicles had not yet been sold.

"Project Kimber"

In November 2005 it became known that various car, design and start-up companies applied for plans and licenses for the Smart Roadster in order to re-release the vehicle under a different name. A letter of intent was then signed in February 2006 with the British consortium "Project Kimber" to draw up a contract for the licensed production. By December 2006, a contract about the rights to develop and sell a car based on the Smart Roadster and the associated production facilities was also concluded. A redesigned roadster was to be presented at the Geneva Motor Show in spring 2007 and production started in mid-2007. Under the name of the traditional AC Cars brand, it should be sold as "AC Ace" and achieve a sales target of 7,000 vehicles per year. The price range mentioned was € 17,500 to € 28,000.

The official website of the "Project Kimber" was closed in December 2008. The AC project announced in April 2009 was also soon put to the file.

Admission statistics

New registrations in Germany

The number of annual new registrations in Germany is listed according to the statistics of the Federal Motor Transport Authority . The "Cabriolets (incl. Roadster)" segment existed until 2006. Open cars have been classified in the other segments since 2007, so that from 2007 the Smart Roadster has been classified in the "Small Cars" segment. The share in percent relates to the share in the respective segment, not to the total number of new registrations in Germany.

Existence in Germany

The stock is listed in Germany as of January 1st every year since 2004 according to the statistics of the Federal Motor Transport Authority . Before March 1, 2007, the vehicle inventory included the number of vehicles registered as well as the number of temporary shutdowns. Since March 1, 2007, the vehicle fleet has only included "flowing traffic" including the seasonal license plates. To enable a comparison of the change between January 1, 2007 and January 1, 2008, the previous year's figure has been adjusted. The share in percent again relates to the share in the respective segment, not to the total number of vehicles in Germany.
