The Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) divides passenger cars into segments . The aim is to improve the statistical comparability of the car models.

Assignment

The Central Vehicle Register (ZFZR) or the registration document does not contain any features that enable automatic segment assignment. The KBA classifies the models into segments on the basis of optical, technical and market-oriented characteristics. It takes place in close coordination with the Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) and the Association of Importers of Motor Vehicles (VDIK).

application

The passenger car segments are used in the statistics on new registrations of passenger cars by segment and model series (FZ 11) since 1999 and on the number of passenger cars by segment and model series (FZ 12) since 2003.

Delimitation criteria

There is no binding “formula” for assigning models to segments. The following characteristics are used as delimitation criteria:

  • Size (length, height)
  • Weight (permissible total mass)
  • Motorization (displacement)
  • Power (top speed)
  • Luggage compartment (payload, variability)
  • Seats (number)
  • Seat height (front)
  • All-wheel drive (driven axles)
  • Rear shape (variants)
  • Vehicle class (for mobile homes)
  • Base price

Structure of the segments

The breakdown of the segments is shown in the following table. The examples are the three model series with the most new registrations in Germany in January 2013.

segment Examples
Minis VW up! , Smart Fortwo , Fiat 500
Small car VW Polo , Ford Fiesta , Opel Corsa , Seat Ibiza , Škoda Fabia
Compact class VW Golf / Jetta , Mercedes-Benz A-Class , Opel Astra , Seat Leon , Škoda Octavia
Middle class VW Passat , BMW 3 Series , Audi A4 , Opel Insignia , Škoda Superb
upper middle class BMW 5 Series , Audi A6 , Mercedes-Benz E-Class , Volvo S 90
Upper class Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class and S-Class , BMW 7 Series , Audi A8 , VW Phaeton
SUVs BMW X models , Mercedes-Benz GLK , Nissan Qashqai , Audi Q5
Off-road vehicle VW Tiguan , Mercedes-Benz G-Class , Toyota Land Cruiser , Land Rover Defender , Suzuki Jimny
Sports car Porsche 911 , Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class , Mercedes-Benz SLS , Nissan 350 Z
Mini vans Mercedes-Benz B-Class , Opel Meriva , Seat Altea / Leon / Toledo
Large vans VW Touran , Opel Zafira , VW Sharan , Renault Espace, Ford Galaxy
Utilities VW Transporter / Caravelle , VW Caddy , Citroën Berlingo
RVs Fiat Ducato , VW Transporter / Caravelle , Mercedes-Benz Viano

The first six segments are purely size classes. For the remaining segments, the type of use or vehicle type and structure are in the foreground. Among the SUVs include all car models as soon as they as M1G -car approved pursuant to Directive 2007/46 / EC. Without a corresponding type approval, car models with an “off-road character” are shown in the SUV segment . The grouping of model series into segments is often a compromise and not always clear, which can lead to controversial results. The KBA regularly regroups models or changes the structure of the segments.
