history
First generation
AwtoWAS began planning a new small car back in 1993. The name Kalina first appeared in 1998, the first prototypes in 1999. However, the official presentation did not take place until November 18, 2004. Production started in 2005.
In July 2007, the 1.4 liter 16V gasoline engine was introduced. By then, a total of 80,000 vehicles had been produced.
In August 2007, 6000 cars had to be recalled due to a fault in the steering system . The vehicles that were built between December 2005 and January 2006 were affected.
With the WAS-1117, a station wagon has been available since December 26, 2007, which is primarily intended to impress with its space.
The Kalina Sport has been on sale since July 2008 , a sporty car based on the Lada Kalina 1119 model and featuring a sport chassis , among other things . The introductory price in Russia was 361,047 rubles (around 8,600 euros).
In March 2009 the production of the WAS-1118 Kalina was stopped.
At the end of 2009, AwtoWAS announced the launch of the compact Kalina City small car . The Kalina City, which is based on the WAS-1119 and has a wheelbase shortened by 150 mm, has been officially available since July 2010. It is equipped as standard with a 1.4-liter 16V petrol engine that develops 66 kW (90 hp).
In July 2010, AwtoWAS also announced that the Kalina will be subjected to a comprehensive facelift in the future. According to AwtoWAS, the revised model, which should contain many new extras, should come onto the market in 2012 at the latest. In addition, the Kalina will also be available with an automatic transmission from August 2012 .
Since August 12, 2011, the Kalina has also been available with a parking aid .
From January to May 2011 and from January to April 2012, the Lada Kalina was the best-selling car in the Russian market.
At the Moscow International Motor Show in summer 2012, AwtoWAS presented the EL Lada electric car , which is based on the Kalina. In January 2013 the first 5 of a planned small series of 100 copies were delivered as taxis.
On March 1, 2013, production of the first generation of the Lada Kalina was discontinued in favor of the second generation.
Second generation
The facelift model announced in July 2010 has been produced under the name Lada Kalina 2 since May 2013 . The hatchback sedan ( WAS-2192 ) has been available since June 1, 2013 . The combi model ( WAS-2194 ) has been available on the Russian market since autumn 2013. Based on the combination version, the Kalina Cross has been available since September 2014 , which differs from the standard version with a 23 millimeter higher ground clearance and a plastic body kit. The notchback variant was replaced by the Lada Granta based on the Kalina , which is offered as an independent model.
The basic equipment of the Lada Kalina 2 includes a driver airbag, daytime running lights and electric windows. The full equipment also includes ABS, ESR, four airbags, audio system with touchscreen, navigation system, air conditioning, automatic transmission and a rain sensor.
The engine is available with 87, 98 or 106 hp petrol engines, with the 98 hp variant only being available in conjunction with an automatic transmission. The top speed of the 106 hp model is 190 km / h.
Due to the insufficient sales of the first generation, the second was initially not offered in Germany. However, since September 2014 the new Kalina has also been advertised in Germany.
In April 2016, Lada presented the Kalina NFR with 100 kW (136 PS). With a top speed of 203 km / h, it is the fastest vehicle in the company's history.
marketing
Measures designed to make the vehicle better known to the public and to prove its reliability have not yet achieved their goal. In 2010, for example, Vladimir Putin drove a distance of 350 km with the car, but had to switch to a replacement vehicle at the start due to a defect. In May 2013, ex-erotic star Sasha Gray was supposed to cross Russia with a Kalina from Vladivostok , but her vehicle was driven on a racetrack by escort staff on the third day and suffered damage to the transmission and suspension, so the trip was canceled.
With the more modern construction and equipment compared to earlier Lada models, such as driver / passenger airbag, side impact protection, ABS (since 2008), seat belt tensioners and on-board computer at a low purchase price (from approx. 8,000 euros), the Kalina is to conquer market shares in Western European countries, even if other equipment features available in this segment such as side airbags and ESP are not available until further notice.
The German importer offers the car with a two-year unlimited mileage guarantee (six years against rust perforation), and for a surcharge it is possible to install a liquid gas system that can be switched on or off while driving. There is also a test vehicle with a fuel cell drive.
The Lada Kalina 1118 was subjected to an aerodynamic test. This resulted in the following drag coefficients :
- For the Lada Kalina (WAS-1118) in the basic configuration: c w = 0.378
- With the Lada Kalina (WAS-1118) in the upscale equipment: c w = 0.347
