The ВАЗ-2104 , German transcription WAS-2104 , internationally common transcription VAZ-2104 , is one of AvtoVAZ in Tolyatti made station wagons from the Zhiguli series. It shares its technology with the WAS-2105 . In Western Europe the car was sold under the trade name Lada .
At the time of the iron curtain, the WAS-2104 was considered the most popular model in the Schiguli series and “better” than a Trabant 601 Universal or a Wartburg 353 Tourist . In Comecon countries , the availability of the WAS-2104 was extremely low, since most of the specimens were primarily built for export to Western Europe and only a small number of them were produced; Between 1984 and 2012 around 1.1 million copies rolled off the production line, which corresponds to only around 6.4% of the total Schiguli production.
Model
There are different models of the WAS-2104, which differ from each other mainly in the motorization:
- WAS-2104: basic version, 1.3 liter engine
- WAS-21041: 1.2 liter WAS-2101 engine
- WAS-21043: 1.45 liter WAS-2103 engine
- WAS-21043-00: standard version
- WAS-21043-01: Standard version
- WAS-21043-02: Luxury version
- WAS-21044: 1.7 liter manifold injection engine
- WAS-21045: 1.5-liter diesel engine WAS-341, 37 kW (for export)
- WAS-21046: Right-hand drive version of the 2104
- WAS-21047: 1.45 liter engine, front skirt of the WAS-2107
- WAS-21048: 1.8 liter turbo diesel engine

description
Like all other Schiguli models, the WAS-2104 is a license replica of the Fiat 124 , a sedan with a self-supporting body, a longitudinally installed front engine and rear-wheel drive. The WAS-2104 differs from this vehicle in many details; The most important difference is the engine, which in most of the WAS-2104s - unlike the Fiat 124 - is a 1.3 liter engine with an overhead camshaft driven by a toothed belt.
The WAS-2104 also has some special features that are not found in other Schigulis. The WAS-2104 has a different rear end with narrower rear panels than the WAS-2105. The rear door is slightly narrower than that of the predecessor WAS-2102 because of the large taillights .
Interior and equipment
The interior corresponds to that of the WAS-2105 except for the rear. It is lined with synthetic leather and robust carpets. The seats offer relatively little lateral support. The interior noise level is quite high when driving on the motorway. The spare wheel well and the fuel tank are installed below the trunk floor, the rear bench seat can be folded down to create a level loading area. Models for export to Western Europe received large exterior mirrors (see red vehicle on the right), while models for sale within the Comecon area received narrow exterior mirrors (see picture in the info box). From spring 1988, all models received a rear window heater and a rear window wiper.
landing gear
The front wheels are individually suspended on triangular wishbones of unequal length with coil springs and telescopic shock absorbers. There is also a cross stabilizer . The coil-sprung rear axle is rigid , it is guided with four trailing arms and laterally by a Panhard rod . Hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers are also installed here. The WAS-2104 has rims of size 5.5 J × 13 in with tires of size 165 SR 13. The brake system is a hydraulic dual-circuit brake system with 253 mm discs at the front and drums at the rear. The handbrake acts mechanically on the rear wheels. The steering is a worm-roller steering .
Engine and drive train
A 1.3-liter gasoline engine with a timing belt-driven overhead camshaft is installed as standard in the WAS-2104 . Later there were also other engines, including a 1.5-liter gasoline engine, a 1.7-liter gasoline engine and diesel engines. The 1.3 liter engine is described in more detail below.
The engine is a water-cooled and naturally aspirated four-cylinder in- line engine with wet sump lubrication , cast iron engine block , counter-current cylinder head . The cylinder head and cylinder head cover are made of die-cast aluminum. The overhead camshaft is driven by a toothed belt. It operates the hanging valves via rocker arms, one inlet valve and one outlet valve for each cylinder. The pistons have valve pockets that are shaped in such a way that if the toothed belt breaks, the valves cannot touch the piston even at top dead center. The engine cannot suffer any engine damage if the toothed belt breaks. The fuel-air mixture is formed with a downflow register carburetor type Weber 32 DCR. The ignition system works with an interrupter contact . The distributor is driven by an intermediate shaft. The motor has an output of 48 kW (measured according to the GOST standard) or 44 kW (measured according to the DIN standard).
The engine transmits the torque to the rear wheels via a single-disc dry clutch , a four-speed gearbox and a cardan shaft. In combination with the 1.5 liter engine, a five-speed gearbox was also available for the WAS-2104. The gears are shifted according to the H shift pattern with a gear stick in the middle of the car.
