successor MG 7

The MG ZT is a sporty version of the Rover 75 and was manufactured by MG at the Rover Longbridge plant . There was also a station wagon version called the MG ZT-T . The design is the same as the Rover 75, with stronger springs and other chassis improvements for better road holding. Production started in summer 2001 and ended in mid-2005 with the financial ruin of the MG Rover Group .

history

In June 2001, almost three years after the presentation of the Rover 75 and a year after the MG Rover Group broke away from BMW , the MG ZT sedan was introduced and the MG ZT-T station wagon in October . In the development phase these models were called the X10 and X11.

The construction of the cars is based on the Rover 75, but the models have a sportier and more aggressive look. Peter Stephens , designer of the McLaren F1, was in charge of designing the cars.

In the late summer of 2003, the particularly sporty version ZT 260+ (code names X12 and X13) with the 4.6-liter V8 engine of the Ford Mustang was presented. The model had to be converted from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive for this purpose and was largely designed by the motorsport and engineering office Prodrive before it came back to MG Rover. The 4.6-liter version is considered a real understatement car. The only externally visible difference between the 260 and other ZT is the quadruple exhaust pipes.

Also in 2003, an aerodynamically optimized MG ZT-T, code name X15, equipped with a 6-liter V8 (765 hp) became the fastest station wagon in the world with a top speed of 360.9 km / h. He achieved this speed at the 55th annual Bonneville Speed Week on the Bonneville Flats, Utah .

Facelift

In spring 2004, MG revised the design of the ZT and ZT-T models, making the front look similar to the Rover 75, which was modified at the same time.

After MG Rover went bankrupt in May 2005, the NAC in China bought the company two months later . The production of the MG ZT started again in spring 2007 under the name MG 7 .
