The MG Y-type is a four-door sedan in the lower middle class , the MG brought out the 1947th

The MG Series YA has a four-cylinder in-line XPAG engine with 1250 cc and 46 bhp (34 kW) that drives the rear wheels. The classic pre-war body is based in part on that of the Morris 8 and Morris 10 . It has curved, color-contrasting fenders, all four doors hinged on the B-pillars (the front ones open to the rear, the rear ones to the front) and free-standing headlights. It had the first independent front suspension built in series by MG, which was initiated by Alec Issigonis and which the MG installed in all subsequent vehicles in practically unchanged form up to the MGB. In addition, these vehicles had a hydraulic jacking system as standard, as in the previous large sedans and tourers of the SA / VA / WA series. In 1951, this model was replaced by the slightly modified MG Series YB with the same engine, which had smaller wheels and an improved braking system.

A tourer (four-seater roadster), the MG Series YT, was offered as early as 1948 . The tourer has an XPAG engine of the same size as the sedan, but it has an output of 54 bhp (40 kW). It corresponded to that of the MG-TC, which was built in parallel and was equipped with two carburetors. It was only built for three years, 904 times in total. In addition, three chassis were delivered to the Swiss bodybuilder Reinbold & Christie, who body the tourer even before production. Zagato also received a chassis, which he provided with a nice body.

Motorsport was also possible with these cars, apart from rallies. Dick Jakobs won the production touring car class with a YB at Silverstone in 1952, 1953 and 1954.

In 1953 the series was discontinued. There was no longer a four-seater successor to the Sports Tourer; it was the last open-top tourer MG built.
