According to the OICA, the global automobile association, 87.3 million vehicles were produced worldwide in 2013 (2010: 77.6 million). Vehicle production increased by 3.6 percent compared to the previous year. The most important manufacturing countries in 2011 were:

• People's Republic of China (18.4 million)
• USA (8.7 million)
• Japan (8.4 million)
• Germany (6.3 million)
• South Korea (4.7 million)

The five states had a share of 58.0 percent of global production in 2011 (2010: 59.1 percent). Other important producers in Europe were Spain, France and Great Britain.

The world's largest automotive group based on the number of vehicles produced was:

• Toyota (8.6 million)
• General Motors (8.5 million)
• Volkswagen AG (7.3 million)
• Ford Motor Company (5.0 million)
• Nissan (4.0 million)

The five companies together had a share of 43.0 percent of global production. If Renault-Nissan is counted as one company, then this group was in fourth place with 6.7 million vehicles.

The world's largest exporters of motor vehicles in 2011 were:

• France (4.9 million)
• Germany (4.8 million)
• Japan (4.5 million)
• South Korea (3.2 million)
• Mexico (2.3 million)

Most of the new vehicle registrations in 2011 had:

• China (18.5 million)
• USA (13.0 million)
• Japan (4.2 million)
• Brazil (3.6 million)
• Germany (3.5 million)

In many industrialized countries , such as the USA, Japan, Germany and South Korea, the automotive industry is one of the most important branches of industry. In the course of 2008, the financial crisis had an increasing impact on the real economy. Effects could first be seen in the USA, then in Western Europe and Japan, and since autumn 2008 all over the world. Most automobile manufacturers in the industrialized countries announced significant production cuts at the end of October / beginning of November in order to respond to sales slumps in the double-digit range. According to information from the World Automobile Association OICA, a total of 61.7 million vehicles were produced worldwide in 2009 (2008: 70.5 million). Vehicle production fell by 13.7 percent compared to the previous year. Demand recovered again thanks to the economic stimulus programs and robust growth in Asia. In 2010, with 77.6 million vehicles produced, the previous record of 2007 was exceeded with 73.3 million.

According to the Ward's Automotive Group, 1.069 billion vehicles were registered worldwide in 2011 (2001: 773.2 million). This corresponds to an increase of 38.3 percent within ten years. This increase mostly took place in the so-called developing and emerging countries . The countries with the largest stock of motor vehicles (cars, trucks and buses) in 2011 were:

• USA (248.9 million)
• China (93.5 million)
• Japan (75.5 million)
• Germany (46.0 million)
• Russia (42.9 million)

Motor vehicles

The countries with the highest number of new vehicle registrations (new vehicle sales) are listed for passenger vehicles (cars), trucks (trucks) and buses.

• Note for the information on Germany : The data from the OICA are identical to the data from the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA), but show different values ​​for the total number of new registrations. Compared to the KBA, the OICA does not take into account motorcycles (2013: 138,632) and in the number of tractors only semitrailer tractors are taken into account in an international comparison . Example 2013: The new registrations are 77,640 tractors, including 30,069 tractor units. The difference of 47,571 for other tractors (e.g. agricultural and forestry tractors) is not taken into account here. There are therefore different values ​​in the total amount for 2013 as an example: 3,443,921 (KBA information) and 3,257,718 (OICA information) = difference 186,203 vehicles, of which 138,632 are motorcycles and 47,571 other tractors. However, the other motor vehicles are taken into account (2013: 15,131). These include fire and police vehicles and civil defense vehicles.

Car prices in the European Union

The European Commission wrote 1993-2011 reports on car prices in the various Member States of the European Union . As of May 1, 2007, the reports were published every six months, as of January 1, 2008 annually. The car prices were based on the recommended prices of the vehicle manufacturers for around 80 car models from 27 brands. The prices were stated including and excluding taxes.

The information in the following example relates to the most recently published report as of January 1, 2011.
