King Long Bus in Malta : Since 2011, public bus transport in Malta has mainly been carried out with King Long vehicles.

Xiamen King Long United Automotive Industry Company Ltd. (short: King Long ) is a Chinese manufacturer and one of the world's largest providers of coaches and city buses . Since it was founded in 1988, the company has produced over 250,000 buses. It is the first Chinese vehicle manufacturer to enter the European Union market.

history

The company Xiamen King Long United Automotive Industry Company Ltd. was founded in 1988. In the production year 2000, 16 buses were sold for 6 million RMB ; in the following years the number of vehicles sold and the revenue nearly doubled every year.

In 2003, with the sale of 82 XMQ6113 buses to Malta, a Chinese company succeeded in selling buses in Europe for the first time. The delivery of a further 172 vehicles to Malta in 2011 attracted considerable media attention; this was (after Malta's accession to the EU in 2004) at the same time the first Chinese sales success in the strongly regulated market of the European Union . The delivery was preceded by a tender by the public bus company Arriva ; The Chinese manufacturer was able to assert itself against the established brands, including the subsidiary EvoBus , which belongs to Daimler AG .

Since 2004, King Long has provided most of the coaches required for the Islamic pilgrimage in Mecca . The use places special demands on engines, aggregates and braking systems, as the buses are mostly only allowed to drive at walking speed when the outside temperature is high . For the customer service tasks, which also include the instruction of the driver, King Long uses specially trained employees with Arabic language skills. Most recently, another 300 King Long buses were delivered for the 2016 pilgrimage, replacing the Daimler-Benz vehicles previously used.

In 2011, around 200 coaches were sold in Italy and a largely nationwide service network was established there within a short period of time. In terms of new registrations for touring coaches, King Long ranks second in Italy.

100 King Long buses were used in London during the 2012 Summer Olympics . In the same year, 300 BRT buses were delivered to the Iranian capital Tehran . Not least because the European Union has imposed several embargoes on Iran, Chinese vehicle manufacturers are considered the market leaders in the Iranian commercial vehicle market.

The company was represented with five new models at the 64th IAA in Hanover in September 2012; In 2014 King Long presented the E 12 hybrid bus at the IAA . By 2016, more than 3,500 hybrid buses had been sold. Several vehicles of this diesel-electric type, which is designed for a speed of up to 100  km / h , have been in service in the Spanish capital Madrid since 2015 .

Market observers point to the low prices for both new vehicles and spare parts, which are well below those of European competitors and could change the European bus market in the long term. The vehicles for Germany and Switzerland are currently being offered by a general contractor in Austria.

Group structure

King Long is run by three capital holding companies: Xiamen CCRE Group Co. Ltd. (a state-owned company under the management of Xiamen City, (24%)), Xiamen KLM Group Co. Ltd. (51%) and Taiwan Sanyang Industry Co. Ltd. (25%).

King Long, in turn, is the holding company for Golden Dragon Bus Company, Ltd., Higer Bus Company, Ltd. and Industria Italiana Autobus SpA with the brands Menarinibus and Padane to 80% through Tevere SpA (formerly King Long Italia). The annual production capacity of the entire group is 152,000 vehicles of all sizes (King Long: 77,000, Golden Dragon: 40,000 and Higer 35,000).

The company has three production lines with an area of 800,000 m 2 : At the site Xiamen is the Xiamen Bus and Coach Manufacturing Base and the Xiamen Mini Van Manufacturing Base ; in Shaoxing , the Shaoxing City Bus Manufacturing Base .

The Group's average growth rate over the past few years has been 34%. According to the company, sales of 6,484 King Long buses generated sales of RMB 1,132 million in 2010, while sales of 25,252 buses of various designs generated sales of more than RMB 7,600 million in 2011. The profits achieved enabled the company to build up a nationwide service network in China with 30 branch offices, more than 100 dealers and 500 authorized workshops in just a few years. The enormous foreign exchange reserves are used to expand the global sales network in Asia, Africa, Australia, South America (except Brazil) and increasingly in Europe.

Economic environment and development in China

Due to the very large population (more inhabitants than Europe and North America combined) and the low level of motorization of the population with a simultaneous rapid increase in spatial and social mobility, there is an annual demand for around 400,000 buses in the People's Republic of China (as of 2012), half of them for public transport.

Large Chinese cities are polluted with considerable air pollution, which is also caused by growing motorization. The government has therefore launched extensive modernization campaigns with the aim of increasingly replacing the city buses, which are mainly powered by diesel engines, with new electric buses. Industry experts assume an annual domestic demand of 50,000 to 150,000 vehicles of this type. In addition, in 2009 the government passed an economic plan backed by subsidies, according to which the People's Republic is to become the global market leader for buses with electric drives within a few years. The program should also serve to secure exports in the long term and create permanent jobs for young people streaming from the countryside to the big cities.

In the capital Beijing alone , the more than 28,000 buses need to be modernized. King Long has therefore expanded its product range to include hybrid buses and pure electric buses in recent years . It also offers vehicles powered by liquefied liquefied natural gas (LNG), compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

Products

King Long offers a wide range of all bus types: The spectrum ranges from medium-sized and large coaches to city buses (also as articulated buses up to 18 meters in length and as double-decker buses ) to special vehicles such as airport apron buses , school buses , buses with blood donation facilities as well as police and other emergency vehicles. In the minibus category , which is not currently available on mainland Europe, ambulances and vans, e.g. B. produced as postal vehicles. Mostly Cummins motors as well as ZF or Voith drive technology are used.

In May 2015, the company presented a new series of hybrid and battery buses that cover a length of 6 to 12 meters.
