Xiamen Golden Dragon Bus Company Ltd. (short: Golden Dragon ) is a Chinese manufacturer and one of the world's largest suppliers of touring , city and minibuses . The company, founded in 1992 as part of a joint venture , belongs to the King Long Group and has a production capacity of over 40,000 buses a year. Since the surprising marketing of three-axle buses in Scandinavia in 2011, the company has been striving for increasing sales opportunities in Europe.

history

The Company Xiamen Golden Dragon Bus Company Ltd. was founded in 1992 through a joint venture between Xiamen Automobile Company Ltd. and the Hong Kong Faya Company Ltd. founded. On May 1, 1992 the foundation stone was laid for the first production facility on an area of 30,000 m 2 in Huli , and production of the Golden Dragon XML6390 minibus began a year later . From 1995, the production capacity for this type of vehicle reached 10,000 units per year.

1997 was the the production midibus Star King XML6700 begun largely the structure and technology of the Toyota Coaster received. In the following year, the company's production value reached RMB 368 million .

In 2000 the structure of the company was expanded to include the production of large and medium-sized coaches and city buses; the Xiamen Golden Dragon Van Co. Ltd. created for this purpose . Haicang Passenger Car Factory in Haicang soon reached a monthly production capacity of initially 200 vehicles. As early as 2003, Golden Dragon was the third largest Chinese manufacturer of medium and large buses. Despite the enormous domestic demand in China, the company is intensifying its export efforts, especially in Southeast Asia and Africa. Foreign exchange income from vehicle sales overseas exceeded $ 100 million for the first time in 2007 .

In 2011, with the sale of 10 hybrid buses for public transport in Turku , the fifth largest city in Finland, a Chinese company succeeded in marketing buses in Scandinavia for the first time. Golden Dragon was able to prevail against Scania and Volvo , the leading manufacturers in Scandinavia . The three-axle vehicles with a length of 14.8 meters have been adapted to European standards in terms of exhaust emissions and noise emissions .

At the 64th IAA 2012 in Hanover in September 2012, the company was represented with two new models: a city bus ( XML6125CL ) in low-floor technology with 33 seats, 58 standing places and a wheelchair space, as well as a luxury coach ( XML6125J ) with 51 seats.

Market observers point to the low prices for new vehicles and also for spare parts. Marketing in Germany is currently (as of October 2013) an inadequate dealer network. The indebtedness of German cities and municipalities also prevents the procurement of new, environmentally friendly hybrid buses for local public transport in many places .

After Golden Dragon sold 4,200 minibuses in Egypt in 2012 , a further 1,200 buses of this type were sold there in February 2013. This enabled the company to overtake the previous market leader in this segment, the Japanese manufacturer Toyota , in terms of sales figures. Africa, where there is a high demand for minibuses due to local conditions, is now seen by Chinese manufacturers as a traditional sales market from which European automobile companies are largely withdrawing and Japanese manufacturers are increasingly being displaced.

Group structure

Golden Dragon is a subsidiary of holding company Xiamen King Long United Automotive Industry Company Ltd. , King Long for short , one of the largest bus manufacturers in the world. This company also includes the Higer Bus Company, Ltd.

At the Huli location there are two production plants on a floor area of 310,000 m 2 as well as additional premises with 320,000 m 2 . The production capacity is given as 40,000 vehicles per year; a total of around 4,000 people are employed (as of 2015).

In March 2013, the company announced the establishment of two more production lines, combined with an increase in production capacity by a further 6,000 buses per year.

Within a few years, the company has a nationwide network in China with four major marketing departments in Beijing , Shanghai , Zhengzhou and Xi'an , and six major spare parts centers (in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou , Changchun , Xi'an and Zhengzhou), more than 150 in-house sales outlets and around 150 authorized workshops set up.

Economic environment and current developments in China

Due to the very large population (more inhabitants than Europe and North America combined) and the low level of motorization of the population with a simultaneous rapid increase in spatial and social mobility, there is an annual demand for around 400,000 buses in the People's Republic of China (as of 2012), half of them for public transport.

In the capital Beijing alone , the more than 28,000 buses need to be modernized. While the umbrella company King Long is promoting the further development of all- electric buses and, in cooperation with universities, the development of light and at the same time powerful vehicle batteries, Golden Dragon has expanded its activities in the improvement of hybrid buses and vehicles powered by compressed natural gas (CNG). Around 1,000 CNG buses of the company are currently in use in various cities in China and over 1,000 Golden Dragon line buses with hybrid drive are in 19 cities with a population of over a million, such as Dalian , Beijing , Tientsin , Nantong , Hangzhou , Ningbo , Wuxi , Xiamen , and Kunming, as well as on the island Hainan and Turku (Finland) in operation.

Current products

Golden Dragon offers buses of all types from 5 to 14 meters in length with 5 to 86 seats: The spectrum ranges from mini and midibuses to coaches and city buses to special vehicles such as school buses , airport apron buses and police control vehicles . Ambulances and vans are also produced in the minibus category . The product range is constantly being expanded.

Motors from different manufacturers as well as components and parts from foreign manufacturers such as ZF and Voith (drive technology), WABCO ( ABS and ASR ), Bosch ( ESC , LDW and ACC ), MAN , Hino and Hyundai are used .

A newly developed sport utility vehicle has been in the range since 2012 ; the vehicle will be marketed - initially only in Asia - under the name Golden Dragon Righto .
