The Benz Tonneau is a medium-sized car made by the German automobile manufacturer Benz in the early 20th century. The tonneau, which had been on offer since 1900, was enlarged after 1901, while the Benz Spider , which was almost identical in construction, was no longer available. The more elegant Benz Phaeton was added as a new model .

The cars were exclusively equipped with four-stroke boxer engines with two cylinders, which Benz called contra engines . There were differently strong engines:

Construction period Displacement Bore × stroke power at speed
1902 1710 cc 100 mm × 110 mm 9 HP (6.6 kW) 920 min −1
1902 2690 cc 120 mm × 120 mm 12 HP (8.8 kW) 980 min −1
1902 2940 cc 125 mm × 120 mm 15 HP (11 kW) 1020 min −1
1902 3720 cc 135 mm × 130 mm 20 hp (14.7 kW) 980 min −1

The wagons had wooden spoked wheels with pneumatic tires and rigid axles with fully elliptic leaf springs. They were equipped with a four-stage countershaft transmission with reverse gear, which was connected to both rear wheels with chains. The maximum speed, depending on the engine, was 50–60 km / h.

The sales prices were very different. While the weakest model was available for 7,520, the strongest cost 15,200.
