Thomas Christian (born August 14, 1951 in Linz , Austria ) is an Austrian violinist and music teacher .

At the age of eleven, he won the Austrian violinist competition. He completed further studies with your New York violin teacher Theodore Pashkus and with Jascha Heifetz in Los Angeles. At the age of nineteen he made his debut with Paganini's First Violin Concerto in D major at New York's Carnegie Hall . Since then he has performed as a soloist in Europe, the United States and Asia. Thomas Christian was a guest of the Dresden Philharmonic , BSO Berlin , Bamberg Symphony , MDR Orchestra , Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra , Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg , Vienna Symphony Orchestra , ORF Symphony Orchestra . He worked with the conductors Kurt Sanderling , Christoph von Dohnányi , Horst Stein , Milan Horvat , Leif Segerstam , Paavo Berglund , Heinz Wallberg , Leopold Hager , Heinrich Schiff .

Thomas Christian is the founder and first violinist of the Vienna String Quintet, which has given concerts in Europe, South America and Japan since 1986. This ensemble has recorded several CDs, including all of Mozart's string quintets and A. Bruckner's quintet. Thomas Christian also gave violin recitals. He works with Paul Badura-Skoda , Jörg Demus , Antti Siirala , Stefan Vladar and Bruno Canino. Thomas Christian was artistic director of the Chamber Music Festival at Tillysburg Castle (Upper Austria) for 12 years, and from 1989 to 2004 he held the same position at the Schladminger Musiksommer.

In addition, Thomas Christian is dedicated to educational work. He teaches at the Vienna Conservatory and was appointed professor at the Detmold University of Music in 1999 .
