The Schellenbergbrücke in Osnabrück is a road bridge that crosses Schellenbergstrasse over the Löhne – Rheine railway line , the steelworks curve and the Osnabrück marshalling yard as well as the Hase river and its side arm Klöckner-Hase. The old bridge, built in 1912, was recently so dilapidated that it had to be replaced by a new one in 2010/11.

location

The Schellenberg Bridge lies in the border area between the two districts of Schinkel in the north and Fledder in the south. The border between the two parts of the city is here the Klöckner-Hase flowing directly on the northern trailer of the bridge, which is also the original bed of the hare. The majority of the bridge with the tracks below it belongs to the Fledder district to the south. In the Schinkel, the Schellenbergstrasse, which crosses the bridge, turns into the Heiligenweg; in the Fledder it becomes the Narupstrasse.

The Volkswagen factory in Osnabrück is located on the south ramp of the bridge ; the steelworks in Osnabrück used to be on the north ramp . After completion, the Haseuferweg was carried out under the bridge .

Track systems

The bridge crosses the double-track and electrified main line Löhne-Rheine, which is the main connection between Berlin and Amsterdam. Likewise crossed marshalling yard is one of the last in marshalling yards Northwest Germany, directly located on the east side of the bridge the hump . Another track that crosses the bridge is the steelworks curve, this track is one of the Osnabrück connecting curves around the Osnabrück main station. It leads from the upper level of the station ( railway line Wanne-Eickel-Hamburg ) to the lower level with the direction of travel Amsterdam.

Construction of the first bridge

Since the construction of the Löhne-Rheine and Bremen-Münster railway lines, level crossings had been built between the two districts. The construction of the freight and marshalling yard in Fledder in 1911-12 meant that these crossings had to be closed and a separating iron wedge was now drawn between the residential areas in Schinkel and the developing industrial area in Fledder. The steelworks and the Rawie company were particularly affected by the separation because their employees now had to travel twice as long to work.

Already during the planning in 1905, letters of protest against the construction of the marshalling yard were handed over to the upper and secret building officer Schellenberg at the Münster Railway Directorate. The mood finally calmed down when the plans to build the bridge were published in 1906. The five-span bridge was completed in 1912 and named Schellenbergbrücke in honor of the secret building council of the Münster Railway Directorate.

Transfer to the city and demolition of the first bridge

In 1994 the bridge, which was owned by Deutsche Bahn, was offered to the city of Osnabrück. This was taken over by the bridge with the promise of the railway to participate in a new building in the near future. The new construction of the bridge was decided in 2004 because further maintenance was hardly economically feasible due to the ailing condition.

The new building initially planned for 2006 was pushed back again and again. The reason was that the city did not agree on the cost and shape of the bridge during negotiations with the railway. Furthermore, the then tendered new building was sued by an unsuccessful bidder. The Higher Regional Court of Celle had to deal with the lawsuit of the second cheapest supplier, which saw errors in the tender winner's offer.

After the court recognized the award to the companies Hofschröer from Lingen for building construction and Diekmann from Osnabrück for civil engineering , the demolition of the old bridge began in August 2009.

The bridge was no longer passable for motorized vehicles for 22 months. On June 21, 2009, a wooden temporary bridge was built especially for pedestrians and cyclists . The full closure of the old bridge began on July 6, 2009.

The dismantling work dragged on due to the tracks below. Closure breaks for the tracks below have been agreed with the railway. During these shutdown breaks, traffic on the route and the marshalling yard had to be quiet. These lockouts were mainly on the weekend in August.

After the preliminary work that did not affect the railroad had been completed, the first parts of the bridge were lifted with a crane in the night of August 1st to 2nd. Further parts of the bridge, including the middle part of the bridge, followed on August 15, 16 and 19.

Construction of the second bridge

The construction of the bridge also had to be based on the operating plan and the agreed breaks in operation for the railway. In addition, the bridge had to be built 1.5 meters higher than the previous building because the specifications for such structures have also changed. Due to the raised construction, the ramps of the bridge also had to be raised and adjusted. The first work for the construction of the new bridge was carried out parallel to the demolition of the old bridge.

The pillars of the new bridge were erected on ground piles before the 4900 cubic meters of concrete of the bridge could be built. After the shell construction was completed shortly before Christmas 2010, cyclists and pedestrians were allowed to cross the almost completed bridge. A total of 95,000 working hours were put in to build the bridge.

Opening of the new bridge

Despite the long and snowy winters in 2009/10 and 2010/11, the 4,000-tonne bridge was completed six months faster than planned. Following the early completion of the bridge, it was officially opened on May 6, 2011 at 3 p.m. The first vehicle that crossed the new bridge was a Karmann-Ghia with the then Mayor Boris Pistorius at the wheel.
